The Department of Music and Performing Arts offers a variety of performance ensembles for a range of abilities. Performing in a music ensemble builds musical skills, expands creative horizons, and develops an appreciation of music that can last a lifetime. Making music together with other students also enriches the college experience.
Although ensemble participation is a curriculum requirement for music majors, students from all academic disciplines and USF staff are welcome to participate for academic credit. With the permission of the ensemble director, community members who are not USF students also may participate in some ensembles without registering for academic credit.
Each ensemble carries one hour of academic credit. Students may register for the same ensemble in as many semesters as desired, or participate in more than one ensemble within a semester. Full-time USF students from any discipline who are enrolled in a music ensemble may audition for a music participation scholarship.
Students joining an ensemble first audition with the department chair and/or the ensemble director. Then they are placed in the group which best matches their interests, musical skill, and the demands of their class or work schedule. We encourage early auditions – ideally a few months before registration, but music faculty also hear auditions during orientation week, or even during the first week of classes. Early auditions, however, do improve a student’s chances for scholarship consideration and they facilitate course registration.
Our ensembles meet and rehearse on regular schedules, just like other classes. During concert weeks, additional rehearsals may be required. Regular attendance by all ensemble members is expected. Some students may need additional individual practice to master the music and contribute positively to rehearsals in class.
Our ensembles perform on campus each semester. All of our concerts are open to the public. Costs for tickets are: Adults – $10, Seniors, Alumni & Non-USF Students – $7. University of St. Francis students are always admitted free of charge. Tickets are expected for all audience members. Tickets can be purchased online at www.stfranics.edu/music-at-moser.
More information on each ensemble can be found by clicking on the individual ensemble titles on this page.
