Academic Coaching Questions and Answers
What is academic coaching?
Coaching is a one-to-one relationship that helps
students clarify what they want from life and
establish an academic plan to achieve it. College
shifts from a series of courses and assignments
to opportunities to achieve a student's dream
in life.
What
does an academic coach do?
A coach listens to students' goals and assists
them in developing a strategy for making them
a reality. This person will support, help,
and celebrate victories with the student.
What
does the student do?
The student is accountable for keeping appointments
and making a certain amount of progress with each
coaching session.
What
can a student expect?
Each session is a check-in to see what the student
has accomplished and set the next plan of action.
The academic plan is personalized. Possible
actions may include goal setting, time management,
study or test strategies, links to mentors, or
analysis of learning styles. Regular coaching
sessions can help sustain momentum and results
even when the work is tough. Students can
discover their individual resources and strengths
to achieve their goals.
How
can I receive coaching?
Register at the Academic Resource Center located
in the Library, Room 214. If you are
required to register for Academic Coaching, please
do so no later than the first week of classes. Available
space for this program is limited.
For USF students at campuses other than Joliet, Ill., e-mail coaching may be requested.
