OLATHE, Kan. - University of St. Francis senior Ben Bradbury (Lincoln-Way HS/Mokena, IL) fired a third-round score of 79, his best outing in three days, but failed to advance to the fourth and final round of the NAIA Men's Golf Championship at Prairie Highlands Golf Course.

Bradbury, who struggled the first two days with rounds of 81 and 84, finished at 28-over par for the three days. He was one of four individual players in the field of 144 that included 28 teams.

Bradbury earned his spot in the NAIA national field by winning medalist honors last October at the NAIA Region VII Championships. He is the first USF individual to ever qualify for the national tournament. The Saints have previously sent teams to the national meet.

APRIL 24:
ELMHURST INVITATIONAL

OAK BROOK, Ill. -- Martin Bozek (Stagg HS/Hickory Hills, IL) fired a two-under par 70 to capture medalist honors and lead University of St. Francis to a second-place finish in the eight-team Elmhurst Invitational at Oak Brook Golf Club on Monday.

The Saints' team total of 319 put them 11 strokes behind host Elmhurst College. In addition to Bozek's 70 (37-33), USF's Jon Zolecki (Minooka HS/Channahon, IL) shot a 77 (42-35), Ben Bradbury (Lincoln-Way HS/Mokena, IL) carded an 81 (44-37) and Andrew Nelson (Crete-Monee HS/Crete, IL) finished with a 91 (42-49). USF's fifth player, Sean Koch (Shepard HS/Crestwood, IL), had to withdraw when class commitments prevented his getting to the Oak Brook Golf Club before his scheduled tee time.

Elmhurst won the team title with all four of its players shooting 78 or less.

APRIL 21-22:
ILLINOIS WESLEYAN INVITATIONAL

NORMAL, Ill. -- University of St. Francis shared the first-round lead at 294 with Millikin on Friday but slipped to a 302 in Saturday's second round to finish in a three-way tie for second in the 20-team Illinois Wesleyan Invitational.

Juniors Grant Garza (Lockport HS/Lockport, IL) and Jon Zolecki (Minooka HS/Channahon, IL) led all scorers with 18-hole rounds of even-par 72, each firing 36's on the front and back nines. Garza earned medalist honors in the tie-breaker.

Illinois Central's Derek Loy was one shot back at 73, followed closely by USF senior Ben Bradbury (Lincoln-Way HS/Mokena, IL) and junior Sean Koch (Shepard HS/Crestwood, IL) who each carded 74's.

MACOMB, Ill. -- Junior Martin Bozek (Stagg HS/Hickory Hills, IL) fired three rounds in the 70's and tied for 32nd individually to lead University of St. Francis to a 10th-place finish in the 13-team Western Illinois Invitational at the Harry Mussato Golf Course.

Bozek was the lone Saint to break 80 in all three rounds of the tourney. Junior Jon Zolecki (Minooka HS/Channahon, IL) narrowly missed that mark when he fired an 81 in the third round after shooting 77 and 75 in the first two sets of 18 holes. Zolecki finished the tourney with a score of 233, just two strokes behind Bozek's 231.

USF's lowest round of the tourney was a 73 shot by senior Ben Bradbury (Lincoln-Way HS/Mokena, IL) in the second round. Bradbury sandwiched that one-over par score with rounds of 82 and 80 and completed the tourney with a score of 235.

Junior Sean Koch (Shepard HS/Crestwood, IL) was the Saints' fourth scorer with a total of 239 (80-82-77). Junior Casey Fraher (Pontiac HS/Odell, IL) finished the three rounds with a total of 266 (88-86-92).

OCTOBER 17-18:
NAIA REGION VII CHAMPIONSHIP

PEORIA, Ill. --- Unuiversity of St. Francis senior Ben Bradbury (Lincoln-Way HS/Mokena, IL) captured medalist honors and was named NAIA Region VII Player of the Year after firing a one-under par, 36-hole total of 143 at the NAIA Region Championship meet at Weaver Ridge Golf Club.

Bradbury’s outstanding performance helped the Saints to a sixth-place finish in the 10-team field. USF finished 21 strokes behind champion St. Ambrose IA.

Bradbury’s effort earned him a spot in the field at next Spring’s NAIA Championship to be held May 16-19, 2006, at Prairie Highlands Golf Club in Olathe, Kan.

"Ben really played some great golf for us," said USF head coach Paul Downey. "His overall play for the two days was fantastic."

"His second shot (on the par 5, 535-yard 18th hole) was one of the best shots out of the rough area that I had ever seen under pressure," continued Downey. "He just hit a wedge shot 160 yards to the middle of the green and then two-putted for birdie to win it."

The medalist honors add to a long list of accomplishments for Bradbury, the lone senior on USF’s roster. He is a three-time first-team All-Northern Illinois Intercollegiate Golf Conference selection and was second-team this year. He earned medalist honors at the conference championship as a sophomore and junior. He will be making his first trip to the national tournament.

In addition to Bradbury’s performance, the Saints also got strong efforts from juniors Martin Bozek (Stagg HS/Hickory Hills, IL) and Jon Zolecki (Minooka HS/Channahon, IL). Bozek fired rounds of 74 and 76 for a two-day, six-over par total of 150. Zolecki finished at eight over par 152 with rounds of 80 and 72.

Junior Grant Garza (Lockport HS/Lockport, IL) shot a 158 (82-76) and junior Sean Koch (Shepard HS/Crestwood, IL) posted a 165 (80-85) to round out the Saints’ scoring.

NOTES: Bradbury won medalist honors by a single stroke over Aaron Tank of Mount Mercy IA and Jeremy Danilson of Grand View IA ... Bradbury’s birdie on the 18th hole of the second round proved to be decisive ... St. Ambrose cruised to the team title with all five players shooting four-over par or better for the two days of competition.

OCTOBER 6:
NORTHERN ILLINOIS INTERCOLLEGIATE GOLF CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP

JOLIET, Ill. --- Junior Martin Bozek’s (Stagg HS/Hickory Hills, IL) two-over par 73 led five Saints with rounds of 79 or better as University of St. Francis continued its domination of the Northern Illinois Intercollegiate Golf Conference by winning the league’s tournament and regular season championships at Inwood Golf Course in Joliet.

Bozek placed second overall, trailing only conference medalist Adam Placko of Robert Morris who fired a 72. USF’s Grant Garza (Lockport HS/Lockport, IL) placed fifth with a 76 and junior Jon Zolecki (Minooka HS/Channahon, IL) tied for sixth with a 77. Kyle Bullock (Bradley-Bourbonnais HS/Bradley, IL) and Ben Bradbury (Lincoln-Way HS/Mokena, IL) tied for ninth with 79’s. Their scores were critical as the top four scorers for both USF and Robert Morris presented a tie for first place at 305. The lower fifth-player score broke the tie. One of the two USF 79’s counted as the fourth score and the other broke the tie with Robert Morris as the Eagles’ fifth score was an 85.

The Saints have won 14 NIIGC titles since 1982 and have taken seven of the last eight. In addition, USF has won eight league tournament championships and six of the last seven.

USF completes the Fall portion of its 2005-06 schedule at the NAIA Region VII Championship Tournament in Peoria on Oct. 17-18.

NOTES: Bozek and Zolecki earned first-team all-NIIGC honors, while Bullock, Bradbury and Garza all were recognized as second-team all-NIIGC ... Bozek is in his first year at USF but for Zolecki it marks his third straight first-team honors ... Bullock redshirted last year in his first season at USF so he, too, is a first-time honoree ... Garza and Bradbury were first-team all-league last year ... Bozek has had the hot hand for USF this week ...On Monday, he earned medalist honors at the North Central College tourney with an even-par 72.

OCTOBER 3:
NORTH CENTRAL COLLEGE FALL GOLF INVITATIONAL

NAPERVILLE, Ill. --- Junior Martin Bozek (Staff HS/Hickory Hills, IL) captured medalist honors with an even-par 72 to lead University of St. Francis to a second-place finish in the five-team North Central College Fall Golf Invitational Monday at Cress Creek Country Club.

Rival Robert Morris College edged out the Saints for the team title. The Eagles compiled a score of 311 while the Saints fired a composite score of 317.

Saints’ junior Jon Zolecki (Minooka HS/Channahon, IL) was in a group at 73 and tied for fifth spot.

Knox took team honors with a final score of 297. Danville Area Community College was second at 299 and USF matched Northern Illinois Intercollegiate Golf Conference rival Robert Morris’ 301 for third place. Knox finished first thanks to a pair of 72’s, a 75 and and a 78 among its four low scorers.

Only a total of nine strokes separate the Saints (1527) and the Eagles (1536) over those four competitions, which include five rounds of golf.

SEPTEMBER 17-18:
MOUNT MERCY COLLEGE NORTH COUNTRY CLASSIC

The USF men shot a 312 on Saturday and lowered their score to 305 on Sunday for a two-round total of 617, 26 strokes behind team champion St. Ambrose (IA). Northern Illinois Intercollegiate Golf Conference rival Robert Morris College finished right behind USF in 10th place with a team score of 619.

Senior Ben Bradbury (Lincoln-Way HS/Mokena, IL) led the Saints with a two-day total of 149 (77-72) and tied for 14th in the tournament. His even-par 72 on Sunday was the Saints’ lowest individual round of the weekend.

SEPTEMBER 12:
ROBERT MORRIS COLLEGE INVITATIONAL

WAUKEGAN, Ill. --- University of St. Francis improved its season mark to 19-5 overall and 7-1 in the Northern Illinois Intercollegiate Golf Conference with an impressive first-place finish in the Robert Morris College Invitational at Bonnie Brook Golf Course on Monday.

The Saints avenged an early-season setback to the hosts by compiling a score of 306, eight strokes better than runner-up Robert Morris.

USF was led once again by junior Jon Zolecki (Minooka HS/Channahon, IL), who earned medalist honors with an even par 72. Junior Kyle Bullock (Bradley-Bourbonnais HS/Bradley, IL) shot a career-best 74 and placed second overall. Senior Rob Martin (Morris HS/Morris, IL) checked in next for USF with a 79 and senior Ben Bradbury (Lincoln-Way HS/Mokena, IL) and junior Martin Bozek (Stagg HS/Hickory Hills, IL) rounded out the Saints’ scoring with a pair of 81s.

USF’s team toal of 306 topped fellow NIIGC members Robert Morris (314), Olivet Nazarene (336) and Rockford (366). Indiana Northwest also competed but only fielded three players and did not post a team score.

NOTES: Zolecki’s even-par round of 72 marked the third straight round in which he has equalled or bettered par ... Bullock’s 74 was a collegiate career best, eclipsing his 76 set just last Wednesday (Sept. 7) in the USF/Lewis University Challenge ... USF placed second to Robert Morris in the season-opening Aurora University Invitational back on Sept. 1. RMC topped the Saints by a single stroke (302-303) that day to account for USF’s only blemish on its NIIGC slate to date ... USF has dominated conference play of late, winning the NIIGC title in each of the past seven seasons and in eight of the previous nine years ... St. Francis travels to Marion, Iowa, for the Mount Mercy College Invitational this coming weekend (Sept. 17-18).

SEPTEMBER 7:
USF/LEWIS UNIVERSITY CHALLENGE

JOLIET, Ill. --- Wednesday’s near-90-degree temperature was nothing compared to the heat University of St. Francis brought to Wedgewood Golf Course in its annual fall dual match with Lewis University.

Led by junior Jon Zolecki (Minooka H.S./Channahon, IL), USF scorched the course, firing a school-record 7-under-par 281 to upend the Flyers, 281-292.

Zolecki’s 4-under 68 marked the second time in six days that he accomplished the personal-best feat. On Friday, at the St. Ambrose University (IA) Invitational, he shot an identical round to place third, one stroke behind the co-medalists.

Zolecki was not the only one shooting well on Wednesday, either. Six golfers in all, including each of USF’s other three scorers, shot no less than par.

Newcomer Martin Bozek (Stagg H.S./Hickory Hills, IL) notched a round of 70 for the Saints, while Lewis’ Lloyd Roth and St. Francis’ Grant Garza (Lockport H.S./Lockport, IL) finished with 71s.

Senior Ben Bradbury (Lincoln-Way H.S./Mokena, IL) rounded out the list of red-hot Saints with his 72, the same total as the Flyers’ Sumeet Arora.

USF’s round shattered its previous-best mark, which was a 289.

NOTES: Bozek, in just three outings as a member of the Saints, has shown improvement each time out, topped by his first under-par card on Wednesday ... Bradbury’s performance marked the fourth time he has shot at or below par in his career, with his best outing coming last fall when he authored a 71 at the Saint Joseph’s College (IN) Puma Invitational (Sept. 13) ... Garza matched his all-time best showing with his 71 on Wednesday. He initially set that mark at last year’s season opener, the Olivet Nazarene University Invitational (Aug. 31) ... Others establishing new career lows that did not figure in the team’s scoring against Lewis were junior Kyle Bullock (Bradley-Bourbonnais H.S./Bradley, IL) and sophomore Andrew Nelson (Crete-Monee H.S./Crete, IL). Bullock’s 76 was six strokes better than the 82 he recorded at the 2002 USF Fall Classic (Sept. 23), while Nelson, with his 77, cut two strokes off his previous-best 79 set at last year’s St. Francis Invite (Sept. 21) ... Making their USF debuts on Wednesday were junior Sean Koch (Shepard H.S./Crestwood, IL) and freshman David Lohmar (Reed-Custer H.S./Braidwood, IL). Both players shot 78.

SEPTEMBER 2:
ST. AMBROSE UNIVERSITY (IA) INVITATIONAL

DAVENPORT, Iowa --- A career-best four-under-par 68 by junior Jon Zolecki (Minooka H.S./Channahon, IL) led University of St. Francis to a score of 294 and a fifth-place showing among 16 teams at the
St. Ambrose University (IA) Invitational on Friday.

Zolecki’s performance tied him for third in a field of 86 participants. Junior Martin Bozek (Stagg H.S./Hickory Hills, IL) added a 73 for the Saints, while seniors Ben Bradbury (Lincoln-Way H.S./Mokena, IL) and Rob Martin (Morris H.S./Morris, IL) had rounds of 76 and 77, respectively

The four teams that finished ahead of USF - St. Ambrose White (278), St. Ambrose Blue (282), Grand View College (IA) (285) and Mt. Mercy College (IA) (287) - all shot under par, which was 288.

Overall, 12 golfers registered sub-par scores, including Pat Breitbach of St. Ambrose White and Mt. Mercy’s Scot Glasford, who tallied rounds of 67.

NOTES: Prior to Friday, Zolecki’s career best for 18 holes was 71, which is a mark he reached as a freshman IN 2003 ... After shooting a 78 in his debut Thursday, Bozek shaved five strokes off that total at St. Ambrose en route to his round of 73 ... If USF is to guarantee itself an automatic bid to the NAIA Championships, it will have to get past St. Ambrose, Grand View and Mt. Mercy in the Region VII Tournament in October.

SEPTEMBER 1:
AURORA UNIVERSITY NIIGC INVITATIONAL

BRISTOL, Ill. --- To say that University of St. Francis has dominated the Northern Illinois Intercollegiate Golf Conference would be an understatement as the Saints have captured the league title in each of the last seven years and in eight of the previous nine campaigns.

But despite that success, USF took second among six teams in the season opener at the Aurora University NIIGC Invitational on Thursday.

The Saints’ team score of 303 was just one stroke behind the 302 turned in by champion Robert Morris College.

Junior Jon Zolecki (Minooka H.S./Channahon, IL) led the Saints with a round of 73, which was good for second in the overall standings.

Seniors Ben Bradbury (Lincoln-Way H.S./Mokena, IL) and Rob Martin (Morris H.S./Morris, IL) shot a 76 to tie for fifth among the 29 individuals.

Junior Martin Bozek (Stagg H.S./Hickory Hills, IL) rounded out USF’s scoring with his round of 78.

Robert Morris was paced by medalist Andrew Lundin (69) and Adam Placko (74).

NOTES: Seeing Zolecki finish atop the team standings is nothing new as he either owned or tied for the Saints’ top score in 13 of 23 rounds a year ago ... Bozek, a transfer from Moraine Valley Community College, made his debut as a Saint on Thursday ... Also competing for USF at the meet was junior Grant Garza (Lockport H.S./Lockport, IL), who registered an 80 ... Before Thursday, Robert Morris was the last team to beat St. Francis in a conference meet, edging the Saints 308 to 311 on Sept. 8, 2004.
