May 19, 2006
Freshman pitcher Erik Panek (Lemont HS/Lemont,
IL) and senior third baseman Bill Sawisch
(Joliet Catholic Academy/Bolingbrook, IL)
have been recognized as all-conference players
in a vote of coaches in the Chicagoland Collegiate
Athletic Conference.
Panek,
who compiled a team-best 9-2 record with a 3.80
earned run average, was the lone Saint voted
to the all-CCAC first team. He enjoyed an outstanding
freshman season that was highlighted by a streak
of seven consecutive victories. After suffering
a loss in his first collegiate decision against
Aquinas (MI) in Sanford, Fla., on March 5,
Panek reeled off seven consecutive wins
before losing to Purdue North Central in Joliet
on April 26. Included in the seven-game streak
were four wins in CCAC play. His best outing
was a four-hit shutout in a 7-0 win over Calumet
(IN) on May 2.
Sawisch
was named to the all-CCAC honorable mention
list. The senior third sacker led the Saints
in hitting with a .348 batting average and 16
stolen bases in 18 attempts. He started 53 games
at third base and placed second on the team
in total hits (62), third in doubles (8), fourth
in RBI (26, despite being the leadoff hitter),
fourth in walks (20) and second in number of
times being hit by a pitch (15).
The
Saints completed their season with a 32-26 mark
and finished second in both the CCAC standings
(15-5) and the NAIA Region VII tourney, finishing
behind only Saint Xavier who advanced to the
NAIA World Series.
