January 31, 2007

JOLIET, Ill. -- University of St. Francis announces the signings of three more student/athletes to letters-of-intent. All three will enroll at USF in the fall of 2007.

The threesome includes a pair of baseball players and one men’s basketball signee.

Joining head baseball coach Gordie Gillespie’s recruiting class are shortstop/pitcher Bobby Markatos (Stagg H.S./Palos Hills, IL) and centerfielder Cory Montgomery (Grace Baptist Academy/Kankakee, IL). Guard/forward Jeff Miller (Stagg H.S./Palos Hills, IL) also has inked a letter to play basketball for USF head coach Pat Sullivan.

Markatos is a three-sport standout at Stagg, playing baseball, basketball and soccer for the Chargers. He also played summer league baseball with the Elite Force, played in the 18-and-under Baseball All-Star Game and was named his team’s Most Valuable Player in 2006. He served as captain of Stagg’s soccer team and earned all-SouthWest Suburban Conference honors as a goalie. Markatos also intends to play soccer for the Saints next fall.

Montgomery plays baseball, basketball and soccer at Grace Baptist Academy in Kankakee. He earned team MVP honors in both baseball (twice) and basketball as a junior and also served as basketball team captain. He earned all-area honors in both baseball and basketball from the Kankakee Daily Journal.

Miller is also a product of Stagg High and played varsity basketball with Markatos. He captured all-SouthWest Suburban Conference honors a junior in 2005-06 and gained honorable mention recognition as a sophomore the preceding year. He was also recognized as all-area in hoops by the Star, Daily Southtown and the Reporter. Miller already owns the Stagg career rebounding record and is closing in on the school’s all-time scoring mark as a senior this year.
