University
of St. Francis senior outfielder Joe Landi
(Lockport H.S./Lockport, IL) set his goals
high from the very beginning, hitting .432 his
first year as a Saint en route to earning NAIA
all-America honorable mention and Chicagoland
Collegiate Athletic Conference rookie of the
year plaudits back in 2002.
Four
years later, Landi sits alone atop one
of the most distinguished lists in the 32-year
history of the illustrious program.
On
Thursday, the same night he was recognized as
an NAIA all-Region VII selection for the second
time in four years, Landi posted two
more hits in as many at-bats to end his collegiate
career batting .390.
That
not only ranks No. 1 on the schools all-time
career chart, but is also 14 points higher than
former record holder Jeff Hermann, who batted
.376 in the early 1980s for the Saints.
"Joe
is one of the most multi-talented players that
we have ever had in the history of the program,"
said USF head coach Tony Delgado. "He
possessed many great tools as a hitter, base
stealer and fielder.
"And,
out of all the great, great hitters that we
have had, Joe is the only one to have led us
in hitting each of his four years. That is a
truly incredible feat."
After
hitting .432 as a freshman, Landi followed
that up with seasons batting .366 and .368 prior
to this years .395 mark.
Landi
also led the charge in seven other categories
this season, highlighted by his 20 multiple-hit
games, 68 hits and 18 stolen bases.
A
four-time all-conference selection, including
a first-team choice all but once, Landi
compiled three other top 10 career marks, as
well, placing third in total hits (292), fourth
in stolen bases (73) and sixth in doubles (52).
A
2004 NAIA All-America Scholar-Athlete, Landi
graduated this past Saturday, boasting a 3.60
grade point average and earning a bachelors
degree in management.
