FISKE, FLYNN, HEBERER NAMED DAKTRONICS NAIA ALL-AMERICA SCHOLAR-ATHLETES

Junior wide receiver Jason Fiske (Belvidere H.S./Loves Park, IL), sophomore defensive back Pat Flynn (Aquin Central Catholic H.S./Freeport, IL) and redshirt junior placekicker Nick Heberer (Washington H.S./Washington, IL) have been named 2007 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes. Heberer was named for the second straight year, while Fiske and Flynn are both first-time honorees.
Heberer, a political science/finance double major, owns a 3.89 cumulative GPA and has been named to the Dean’s List in all six of his semesters at St. Francis. He served as the Saints’ punter and placekicker for each of his first two seasons and concentrated solely on the team’s placekicking and kickoff chores this season. He connected on 5-of-7 field goals with his only two misses coming from 60 and 43 yards out. He led the Fighting Saints in scoring his first two years and was second this season with 31 points (5 FG’s, 16 extra points).
Fiske, an accounting major, carries a 3.83 cumulative GPA. A knee injury limited Fiske to just the first two games of the 2007 season but he still managed eight catches for 54 yards. Fiske was USF’s starting quarterback as a freshman in 2005 and for the first half of the 2006 season. He was an honorable mention all-Mid States Football Association/Midwest League pick as a sophomore.
Flynn, owns a 3.73 GPA at St.Francis after transferring from Northern Illinois in the winter of 2006. He collected 33 tackles this seaosn, including 19 solos. He forced one fumble and was credited with two pass deflections.
In order to qualify for this award, the student-athlete needs to be a junior or senior academically and have a 3.50 cumulative GPA.
Heberer is just the fifth Saint to be honored two times as an NAIA Scholar-Athlete. USF has now had 16 NAIA academic honorees in the past 16 seasons.
