For Immediate Release
February 12, 2006
Senior linebacker Tom Olszta (Lockport H.S./Lockport, IL) and redshirt sophomore placekicker Nick Heberer (Washington H.S./Washington, IL) have been named 2006 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes. Olszta earned the honor for the second consecutive year and Heberer was named for the first time.
Olszta, a finance and marketing major, has compiled a 3.86 cumulative grade-point average. He has earned Dean’s List recognition in all seven of his semesters at St. Francis. Injuries limited him to playing in just seven games as a senior and he finished the year with 21 total tackles. He was the Fighting Saints’ fourth-leading tackler with 62 total stops, including 24 solo tackles as a junior in 2005.
Heberer, a political science major, owns a 3.90 cumulative GPA and has been named to the Dean’s List in all five of his semesters at St. Francis. He has served as the Saints’ punter and placekicker for each of his two seasons. He led the Fighting Saints in scoring each year and was 9-for-11 in field goal attempts this past season and perfect on nine extra-point tries. He averaged 37.6 yards per punt and placed 11 of his 37 kicks inside the opponent’s 20 yard line.
In order to qualify for this award, the student-athlete needs to be a junior or senior academically and have a 3.50 cumulative GPA.
Olszta is just the fourth Saint to be honored two times as an NAIA Scholar-Athlete. USF has now had 13 NAIA academic honorees in the past 15 seasons.
