OCT. 4:
OLIVET NAZARENE UNIVERSITY INVITATIONAL

ST. ANNE, Ill.— Host Olivet Nazarene University captured first place over Robert Morris by virtue of a lower score at the No. 5 position and that order of finish in the final meet of the Northern Illinois Intercollegiate Golf Conference gave third-place University of St.Francis the 2007 league title.

The conference season consisted of three meets — one hosted by each of the three schools — with the first-place team earning one point, second place two points and third place three points. USF won the title at the first meet which the Saints hosted at Inwood Golf Course on Sept. 12 and tied Robert Morris for first at the Eagles’home meet on Sept. 26. Those two finishes left USF with just 2 1/2 points, with Robert Morris at 4 points and ONU at 5 1/2.

With today’s order of finish, USF completed the three-meet season with a low total of 5 1/2 points, while Robert Morris ended up with 6 and ONU had 6 1/2.

The conference title was USF’s 12th in head coach Paul Downey’s 13 years with the Saints.

USF shot a team score of 315, 11 strokes behind the other two teams. Freshman Drew Anderson (Lockport H.S./Lockport, IL) and junior Andrew Nelson (Crete-Monee H.S./Crete, IL) led the Saints with rounds of 77. Freshman Pat Fitzgerald (Homewood-Flossmoor H.S./Flossmoor, IL) was one stroke behind them with a total of 78. Sophomore Steve Sourigno (Joliet Catholic Academy/Joliet, IL) rounded out the Saints’ scoring with an 83.USF’s fifth player — freshman Adam Billmeyer (Andrew H.S./Tinley Park, IL) — carded a 90.

USF is off until it competes in the NAIA Region VII Championships at Eagle Ridge Golf Club in Galena on Oct. 15 and 16.

NOTES: Anderson and Fitzgerald earned first-team all-conference honors and Nelson claimed second team recognition. The all-conference teams were selected based on scoring averages in the three conference meets. The five low averages plus ties earned first-team accolades. Anderson and Fitzgerald were joined on the first unit by conference medalist Chris Myers of Robert Morris, Andrew Lundin of Robert Morris and Brad Dulin and Seth Doran of Olivet Nazarene.

USF/LEWIS UNIVERSITY CHALLENGE

JOLIET, Ill.— University of St. Francis opened its 2007-08 men’s golf fall season with its annual battle against neighboring rival Lewis University on Wednesday at Wedgewoood Golf Course.

The young Saints, who return just two players from a year ago, had four freshmen among their top six players. The youth and collegiate inexperience was evident as Lewis, an NCAA Division II school, pinned a 295-313 loss on the Saints.

USF frosh Drew Anderson (Lockport H.S./Lockport, IL) led the Saints with a 2-over par round of 74. Pat Fitzgerald (Homewood-Flossmoor H.S./Flossmoor, IL), also a freshman, placed second among the Saints with a 78.

Sophomore Steve Sourigno (Joliet Catholic Academy/Joliet, IL) fired a 79 and junior Andrew Nelson (Crete-Monee H.S./Crete, IL) carded an 82. Freshman Adam Billmeyer (Andrew H.S./Tinley Park, IL) shot an 85 and fellow frosh Jim Mulcahy (Lyons Township H.S./Willow Springs, IL) followed with an 86. Lewis had the two low scorers on the day, Josh Butterfield with a 5-under par 67 and Brian Carlson with an even-par 72. Anderson placed third with his 74 and Fitzgerald was fifth with his 78.

NOTES: The loss to Lewis marked the second straight time and the fourth time in the last six years that USF has lost the early-season meet with the Flyers. USF lost by a similar margin last year (286-300) despite having a much more veteran team than it has this season ... Anderson’s 74 was the lowest by a USF freshman in his collegiate debut in over 10 seasons.
