Intramurals

YOUR 2004 FALL UNIVERSITY OF ST. FRANCIS
INTRAMURAL PROGRAM

The USF Intramural staff welcomes back all returning students, and extends a hearty welcome to all new students. We hope you had a great summer and are ready for an exciting and fun-filled year here at USF. We know that you will be receiving a top flight education, and that advancing toward your intended degree is your first priority. At the same time, we know that from time to time you will need to get away from the stress and rigors of your studies to enjoy yourself, and have fun in a social setting. Your USF Student Life Department is committed to helping you do this.
Your USF Intramural Program is a vital component of the total Student Life program. Throughout the year we will be offering a number of different activities for men and women, and also a number of Co-Rec activities. Most will be one-night events so you don't have to make a long commitment to participate. In participating you can just have out and out fun, be highly competitive, or fall anywhere in-between.
Following is a list of events we will be offering this fall, with a short explanation of each, and some details.

CO-REC BOWLING

With this activity the teams can be all female, all male, or they can be a combination of both. We bowl on Sunday nights (a dead time for most students) starting at 8:45 pm. . We bowl at the Joliet Town and Country Lanes on West Jefferson Street.
So that it does not become an overly long night we only bowl four to a team, not the traditional five. Generally the maximum amount of time spent will be two hours and very often less than that.

For only $100.00 per team, each team will receive:
  1) 8 weeks of league bowling with 3 games each night
2) Playoff competition ( all teams compete ) with at least 3 games of bowling , and cash prizes.
3) Turkey Bowl: Two Sundays before Thanksgiving at least 5 turkeys will be awarded to lucky winners
4) Crazy Bowl, Pizza Buffet, and Bowling for Dollars with at least 3 games of bowling.

Ten weeks of bowling, playoff competition with cash prizes, turkey bowl, crazy bowl, pizza buffet, and bowling for dollars for just $100.00 per team. Don't miss out on what has traditionally been one of the most participated in Intramural activities. Start organizing your team now. League play begins on Sunday, September 12. Rosters are due no later than Friday, September 10. If you are going to enter a team, at least one half ($50.00) of the team fee must accompany the roster, with the remainder due not later than the second Sunday of league play.

MEN'S & WOMEN'S HORSE SHOE TOURNEYS

Looking for something to do at 12:00 noon on Wednesdays. Here it is! Starting on Wednesday, Sept. 15, and continuing until fall break we will have horseshoe stakes set up on the Quad behind the Rec-Center. "Pitch" in and be a participant in the men's and women's Horseshoe tournaments. The tournaments will run from 12:00-1:00, but you can play for as little as fifteen minutes if you like. The format of the tournament will depend on the number of participants. Even if you have never played before, come out and give it a try. "Who knows," someday you may own a farm, and may find horseshoes lying around, and had you not participated in the IM Horseshoe tournament you would not have known what to do with them when you found them!
Hope to see you on Wednesday, Sept. 15. It is going to be a gorgeous afternoon. Count on it!! To participate JSU.

LONG DRIVE, CHIPPING, AND PUTTING TOURNEY

This will be a C0-Rec activity with the men and women competing in different divisions. The competition, or fun ( whichever you want to make it ) will take place at the Inwood Park driving range on west Jefferson street.
Fall generally produces the most pleasant weather of the year, and it is a great time to be out on a golf course.
Get a group of friends together, and come out to see who will capture the bragging rights as to who hits the ball the straightest and farthest, who can chip a ball from 50-75 yards out and lay it up within a few feet of the pin, or who has the nerves of steel to make that 15' putt with "zillions of dollars on the line."
If you want to participate all you have to do is JSU ( just show up ) at the Inwood Park driving range on Monday, Sept. 20 at 3:00 pm.
Balls and clubs will be provided. ( You can use your own clubs if desired, but no $376.00 drivers allowed. $375.00, legal! )
USF golf team members can participate for fun, but cannot be in on the competition phase of the activity.

CO-REC 9-HOLE GOLF OUTING

This will be a Co-Rec activity with both men and women able to participate. We will be golfing at the Inwood Golf Course on West Jefferson Street. IF we have three or more participants it will be a team event with names being drawn out of a hat. The winning team will receive a prize.
Fall is a great time of the year to be on the golf course. The days are cooling down, the leaves are changing colors, and a relaxing time can be had by all who wish to follow in the footsteps of Annaka Sorenson and Tiger Woods..
If you plan on participating you must sign up by Thursday, Sept. 23 ( See Ping Pong tournaments.) There are no greens fees! Your IM dept. picks up the tab.
Sorry, USF golf team members are not allowed to participate in this activity.

PING PONG (TABLE TENNIS) TOURNAMENTS

Is there a Forrest Gump or Ming Soy Ling walking the halls of USF? Ping Pong tournament time is here! We will be having Men's and Women's singles, doubles, and mixed doubles tournaments. (Actually we have never had a mixed doubles tournament, although it has always been offered. Will some of you co-eds finally make it happen?)
Ping Pong is a fascinating game, with doubles play being one of the most exciting and fascinating games ever created. Those that have played it know what I mean. (The "Gray Haired" one will be looking for a partner for both Men's Doubles and Mixed Doubles. Call x 3406 if interested.)
We do not play to the traditional 21-point game. We play 12-minute games with 2 wins out of 3 games constituting a match. Ping Pong is a fast paced game, and by playing 12-minute games you not only get the enjoyment of the game, but you also get at least a 24-minute workout, and often a 36-minute one. ( By the way, in the first ever 12
minute game played, the score ended 72-38.)
To participate you must sign up on one of the tournament bracketing boards hanging in the cafeteria, the Rec-Center (next to security), or in the off-campus locker/lounge area. Dates and times of the matches will be arranged to fit the schedules of the participants. The matches will be played on the balcony of the Rec-Center.
Paddles and balls will be provided. SUE Friday, Oct. 1.

RACQUETBALL TOURNAMENTS

Even though the walls do most of the work for you, a very beneficial physical workout can be had by playing racquetball. With the walls doing most of the work you can also have a lot of fun because you don't have to chase the ball so much. (a la tennis) We will be offering both men's and women's double elimination tournaments. Games are to 21 with no deuce. (at 20-20 the next point wins) Two wins out of 3 games constitute a match. To participate you must sign up on one of the tournament bracketing boards hanging in the Cafeteria, the Rec-Center, and in the Off-Campus locker/lounge area by Wednesday, Oct. 22. Dates and times of the matches will be arranged to fit the schedules of the participants. SUE Wednesday, Oct. 22.
Racquets and balls will be provided as needed.

CO-REC 16" SOFTBALL TOURNEY

Harry Volkman has promised us a clear sky, sun shiny day on Monday, Oct 4, and therefore we will be having a 16" slow pitch softball tournament, "Chicago Style". ( no gloves ) On the Quad, the tournament will start at 3:00pm, and because we play one pitch softball, the games will not take more than 15-20 minutes to complete.
Being a Co-Rec activity, the teams can be comprised of all women, or a mixture of men and women with the men not exceeding five in number.
Take a page out of the hallowed bible of Marvin Miller, and organize, organize, organize! Rosters are due by Wednesday Sept. 29.

CO-REC VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT

In this activity you can JSU (Just Show Up) as individuals to participate, or you can come with a six-person team already intact. If you come with a team the makeup can be three women and three men, or more women than men. The number of men cannot exceed the number of women. For the individuals that show up teams will be organized on the spot.
The makeup of the tournament will depend on the number of participants. Matches will have a time limit so that we can end tournament play as close to 11:00 PM as possible.
If USF Volleyball players wish to participate they must come as individuals and not as part of an intact team.
Volleyball is a most enjoyable team oriented game, so plan on joining your friends for some fun and excitement on Wednesdays, Oct. 6, 13, and 27 at 9:30 PM in the Rec-Center.
Note: You can participate one, two, or all three nights. (hopefully all three)

HAUNTED TRAILS NIGHT

.Will no one believe that you "are" a line-drive/home run hitter? Well strut your stuff at the Haunted Trails batting cages. (We will have baseball and slo-pitch softball competition.) Do you dream of racing around a track like Jeff Gordon or Sarah Fisher? Your dreams can become reality at the Haunted Trails sprint car racetrack. Can you be a "master Skeeball player"? Find out at haunted trails.
Haunted Trails Night is a Co-Rec activity in which both women and men can participate in one, two or all three events. The format of fun, and or competition, will depend on the number of participants.
Haunted trails is located on Broadway street just south of Theodore street (next to the golden arches ) here in Joliet. To participate JSU at Haunted Trails at 7:00 pm. on Monday, October 11.

CO-REC WALLYBALL TOURNAMENT

If you like volleyball you will love Wallyball! This exciting and fast paced game is played inside a racquetball court and the ball can be played off the walls and ceiling. The ball used is much lighter than a volleyball, and is made out of rubber. Due to the confinement of the court (20' x 40') there are only three players on a team.
This is really a fun game. If you want to participate JSU (Just Show Up) by the Rec-Center Racquetball courts on Wednesday, Nov. 3 at 9:30 PM. This is a Co-Rec activity with both men and women eligible to participate. The tournament format will depend on the number of participants.

MEN'S & WOMEN'S PING PONG TOURNEYS

Great, great, great, great, great, activity. Who will de-throne the persons who win, or have won the tournaments back in October? SUE Fri, November 5.

WOMEN'S & MEN'S RACQUETBALL TOURNEYS

Now that you have already participated in the first tourney back in, October, and you can appreciate the excitement, excellent exercise, and competition that Racquetball affords you, you won't want to miss the final tourney of the fall semester. Reserve your spot in the tourney NOW! SUE Friday, Nov. 5

CO-REC 4 ON 4, NO KILL VOLLEYBALL TOURNEY

The height of the net will be set at eight feet, and without hard kills being allowed, the gist of the game will be to hit the open spots, and with only four players on the court, the open spots are there.
The teams can be comprised of all men, all women, or a combination of both. Which team will have the quickness and skill to cover the entire court with only four plalyers.
We will find out on Wednesday, Nov. 10 as Co-Rec 4 on 4 No Kill Volleyball makes its inaugural debut. RD by Friday, Nov. 5.

DRAW OUT OF A HAT BASKETBALL LEAGUES

League play for both men's and women's basketball will begin on Monday, Nov.15. If you want to participate in either the men's or women's basketball league, you must sign up on one of the sign-up posters located in the cafeteria, in the Rec Center (by security), or the commuter's lounge.
. All of the names will be put into a hat and at noon on Wed., Nov.10, in the cafeteria, names will be drawn out of a hat to form the teams. Teams will be posted in the cafeteria, the Rec-Center and the commuter's lounge. League play will be twice a week with games starting at 9:00 pm.
The beauty of the Draw out of a Hat Basketball leagues is that the teams are generally evenly matched. Over the years it has been a rarity for a team to end up "stacked" when the names are drawn out of a hat. Another good feature of these leagues is that we have mandatory substitution. This has two benefits, one, no one gets extremely tired, and two, EVERYBODY, gets to play.
Don't be left out! Sign up on one of the sign-up posters located throughout campus. SUE Wednesday, November 5.

MEN'S & WOMEN'S "TURKEY BIRD" SHOOTOUT!

On Tuesday, Nov. 16, at 9:30 PM in the Rec-Center, five lucky participants will walk away with a Thanksgiving turkey. This will be a Co-Rec activity with both men and women eligible to participate. To win a turkey the participants will have to throw a tennis ball through either a stationary or moving (hasn't been decided yet) wooden turkey.
Depending on the number of participants you may have to be on target more than once. The exact format of this competition will be determined by the number of participants.
Make "mom and dad" happy by bringing home this year's Thanksgiving Day turkey. Sorry, USF baseball and softball players are not eligible for this activity.
SUE Fri, Nov. 12.

FACULTY, STAFF, ADMINISTRATOR VOLLEYBALL CHALLENGE

Rumor has it that the faculty-staff-administrator volleyball team has never been beaten in an IM Intramural match against the students. This reporter strongly suspects that the rumor is in fact "truth", and that this long standing tradition will continue. While you students may have been lounging around the beaches, and the swimming pools this summer, we were busy recruiting new personnel who not only will do a great job in their assigned University duties, but have exceptional volleyball skills.
If "YOUTHFUL INSENSIBILITY" leads you to believe you have even the slightest chance of defeating the University employees volleyball team turn in a roster by Wednesday, Dec. 1. The "The Silence Of The Lambs" will take place on Wed. Dec. 8, at 8:00 pm in the Rec-Center.

WITH ALL 9:30 STARTING TIME ACTIVITIES WE WILL ATTEMPT TO FINISH PLAY NO LATER THAN 11:00.

IF THERE IS AN ACTIVITY THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO HAVE AS PART OF YOUR INTRAMURAL PROGRAM, PLEASE LET ME KNOW. WITHIN REASON I AM OPEN TO ALL SUGGESTIONS.

FOR INFORMATION ON ANY OF THE ABOVE, CALL X 3406. IF I AM NOT IN LEAVE A MESSAGE AND I WILL GET BACK TO YOU AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. TONY DELGADO, INTRAMURAL DIRECTOR.
