November 2, 2006
JOLIET, Ill. -- University of St. Francis head softball coach Dick Smith has announced the signings of high school seniors Brittany Arrington (Richards H.S./Oak Lawn, IL) and Lauren Panek (Lemont H.S./Lemont, IL) to letters of intent.
Arrington, who has played primarily at third base, first base and catcher as a prep, helped lead her Richards High team to a 28-6 final record, a regional title and a SICA South championship as a junior in the spring of 2006. She earned all-conference recognition at first base last spring.
Arrington played third base for the Oak Park Windmills summer team, led the club in runs batted in and compiled a .466 batting average and .675 slugging percentage. She played this fall for the Orland Park Sparks 18-and-under traveling team.
Panek, whose older brother Erik finished his freshman season last spring as the No. 1 starting pitcher on the USF baseball team, started at shortstop for a 29-7 Lemont High School team as a junior. She lettered as a freshman, sophomore and junior and has helped Lemont capture a pair of regional titles as well as a Suburban Prairie South Conference championship in 2005.
Panek earned all-area honors from the Herald News last spring, hitting .274 and committing only three errors on the season. She is a three-time Academic All-Conference selection in both softball and basketball and maintains a 4.125 grade point average (4.00 scale).
