College of Nursing and Allied Health

Medical Technology

The field of medical technology is the medical application of the basic sciences. Principles of cellular biology, organic and biochemistry, microbiology, immunology and physiology are applied to clinical laboratory testing. The medical technologist performs a wide range of clinical laboratory tests and procedures on various body fluids and tissues to determine the presence or absence of disease, to monitor response to treatment, and to aid in health maintenance. The Bachelor of Science of medical technology prepares a student for a position as a laboratory director.

Students majoring in Medical Technology spend three years at the University taking liberal education and science courses followed by a 12-month professional phase at an affiliated hospital school (or two years at a community college of other university, then one year (Junior) on-campus at USF, then 12 month clinical phase (39 hrs/week)).
