Service Learning offers students an instructional framework that moves beyond traditional approaches to classroom instruction. Students learn to apply new knowledge and skills through active participation in their personal learning process. The active participation of students in Service Learning projects fosters lifelong learning, encourages civic engagement, and builds stronger communities.

The University of St. Francis has defined Service Learning as follows:

Service Learning is a pedagogy that engages students in community-based service projects and:

1) is aligned with course content to achieve academic learning outcomes,
2) includes student reflection on service as a significant element of course requirements, and
3) assesses learning outcomes based on service project performance and reflection.
