More on Dionysus.......................
There was a dual nature to Dionysus; the god of wine could be kind and
beneficent and also cruel
It is said that the women who worshipped Dionysus were often frenzied with
wine. (I wonder if he resembled Tom cruise or Kevin Costner?) Stories tell how
they would live in the forests and tear to pieces the wild creatures they met.
it is also reported that a train of these women accompanied Dionysus,
dancing and singing exultant songs while wearing
fawn-skins
over their robes and
wreaths of ivy on
their heads.
Because the Greeks saw facts clearly, they could see that being the god of
wine had both a good and a bad side. While wine cheers and warms men's hearts,
it also makes them drunk (Edith 56-59).
