schools team up in teacher effort Joliet district: Training program at A.O. Marshall, Farragut By

News JOLIET
- Pupils at two public grade schools are
benefiting from a teacher-training program
being administered by the University of
St. Francis. A portion of a $7 million
grant is being used to expand a teacher-development
program at Farragut Elementary School
and launch a similar program at A.O. Marshall
School. The
university developed a partnership with
the Joliet Grade School District for the
Farragut program two years ago. College
students spend time in classrooms, teaching
youngsters to read and picking up experience
about instructional techniques. Read

| The Future Educators of America will have their induction of new members and new officers on Tuesday, November 2nd at 5:00 pm in the Moes and Presidents Room. The Illinois Teacher of the Year, Deborah Perryman will be the keynote speaker. Deb is an Environmental Science Teacher at Elgin High School who transformed 335 acres of land on Elgin High school property to a hands-on, multi-sensory natural resource on environmental education. | In honor of National Chemical Week (NCW), the Joliet Section of the American Chemical Society will present a chemical magic show "Chemical Demonstrations Using Household Chemicals" by area school teachers under the supervision of ACS Mentors. The event, sponsored by ACS- Joliet Section and The University of St. Francis, will take place Saturday, October 30 from 10:00 to 11:00 am at the University of St. Francis Performing Arts Center Auditorium. The University of St. Francis, along with Joliet Junior College and the Joliet public libraries, have partnered with the Joliet Community Even Start program which will initially serve 50 families that live within the Joliet Grade School District. The program will work with low-literacy parents, as well as children age 7 and younger, in an effort to help younger generations break free from a cycle of poverty. Read full article... As part of the Even Start program, USF will offer T-Pals (Teachers Teaching Parents About Literacy Skills) which is a professional development graduate level course which provides teachers and families with methods to support learning and maximize familial participation in their childrens emerging literacy. | All are invited to attend "Children's Literature: The Keys to Reading and Learning" presented by Dr. Dan Darigan on Wednesday October, 27 at 6:00 pm. The presentation will be held at the Twin Oaks Campus. Dr. Dan Darigan is presently a Full Professor at West Chester University, in Philadelphia in the Department of Literacy. He recently completed his first children's novel, Jumping Back in Time, and co-authored a textbook with Prentice Hall titled Children's Literature: Engaging Teachers and Children in Good Books. He has published numerous articles in The Reading Teacher, Language Arts, and The Journal of Children's Literature and presented extensively at regional, national, and international conferences. Julie Duis, Education Coordinator for Ag in the Classroom (affiliated with the Illinois Farm Bureau), presented a preservice teacher workshop. College of Education teacher candidates in EDUC 385 Methods of Teaching Science and Social Studies, taught by Cathy Nelson, learned how to conduct classroom projects such as a soy bean necklace, Illinois charms, and corn plastic products. Teacher candidate Amber Fiterman was dressed up as a cow to demonstrate the "Beautiful Bovines" activity which appears on the Ag in the Classroom website. |

| Future Educators of America (FEA) will hold a meeting on October 6th at 4:00 PM in the Abbey of Marian Hall. Apple foundraiser information and order sheets will be handed out. New officers will be elected at the meeting. All education majors are welcome to come and hold office. Cookies and punch will be served. | ||

| The College of Education will host a Scholastic Book Fair October 4-6 from noon to 8:00 pm in the Moser Lounge of Tower Hall. All proceeds will benefit Joliet Public School District 86 A O Marshall Elementary School and Farragut Elementary School. Both A O Marshall and Farragut are Professional Development Schools for the College of Education. Last semester the fair raised $725 in books for Farragut Elementary School. for Leadership (REAL) for attending
an Autism Conference held on September
27th and 28th at the Lisle Hilton.
The conference is presented by Childhood Communication Seminars and the speaker is Dr. Barry Prizant. Dr. Prizant has presented more than 450 seminars nationally and internationally on autism spectrum disorders. He speaks specifically on the SCERTS model which offers a framework of specific goals and procedures for assessment and educational programming addressing the core challenges faced by children with ASD.
