JOLIET - Local educators will use part of a $3.75 million federal grant to increase the number of minority teachers working at Joliet Township High School.

JTHS will partner with the University of St. Francis to administer a portion of the grant, which was announced this week by the U.S. Department of Education as part of Associated Colleges of Illinois' Diversity at the Blackboard initiative.

"We've had a concern for years about our ability to attract good minority teachers," JTHS Superintendent Paul Swanstrom said. "We pride ourselves on the diversity of our student body. It's important for kids to see diversity among the faculty." More...

Congratulations to Cathy Nelson, Assistant Professor, on organizing a very successful "field trip" for a class from Farragut Elementary School, a PDS Partner. The class visited Mrs. Nelson's methods class and was treated to a variety of engaging "hands-on" science activities that were facilitated by COE's teacher candidates. The event was mutually beneficial to COE teacher candidates and the Farragut students.

Experiment with science

Fourth-graders from Farragut Elementary School visited the University of St. Francis on Sept. 28 to participate in science activities with USF elementary education majors. The science projects were conducted from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the library. Students' science projects included using materials to design and build a bridge; an online computer simulation to create a roller coaster and study the effects of gravity; and static electricity experiments, among others.

The USF instructor involved in the project was Cathy Nelson. Shane Johnson, a USF alumnus, brought in his Farragut School fourth grade class.

JOLIET — Second-graders in Collette Quigley's class at A.O. Marshall School are breaking into smaller groups to practice their reading. The 7-year-olds are at different skill levels, so Quigley takes one group, another reads on its own, and student teacher Amy Lanham leads the third group.

Lanham, an education major at the University of St. Francis, is treated more like a co-teacher than an intern.

"Each person is going to read a page. If you're listening to someone else read, you're going to point (in your books) and follow along," she tells her group. More...
