This year's theme of the Regional Education Academy for Leadership Annual Reading Conference is Navigating the Literacy Highway. Keynote speaker, Dr. Maria Walther, will present "A Teacher's Travel Bag of Reading and Writing Strategies". Ten break-out session are also planned to address various areas of literacy for the K-8 educator. Please phone Colleen at 740-1311 by May 10th for further details and registration information. |

Saturday, May 15th from 9-11 a.m. Dr. Garry Raymond,
Superintendent of Minooka High School District, will
be presenting an informational session at Twin Oaks
for current and/or potential adjuncts from
the Teaching and Leading and Educational Leadership
masters programs. Topics for the morning will include
Teaching the Adult Learner, Teaching to the Essential
Questions, and Strategies for Different Course Delivery
Options. Check in will take place and a continental
breakfast will be served from 8:30-9:00. |

April 27 An Artists' Reception will be held at Twin Oaks from 6:00-7:00 PM in honor of the local artists who donated their work to be displayed at the Twin Oaks site during the past few months. April's reception will welcome students from Dirksen School in Joliet and Cunningham School in Channahon. Parents, siblings, grandparents and friends are all welcomed to join us in this celebration. | Wanda Wilson, a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor form DHS/Office of Rehabilitation Services and Cindy Fisher, Transition Specialist from Plainfield High School will be speaking to Special Education candidates at 4:00 p.m in Room N215 of Tower Hall. The talk will focus on Transition and Services for students with disabilities post high school. All are welcome to attend. | ||

April 23 An Adjunct Reception will be held at the Twin Oaks Campus on Friday, April 23rd from 4-6 p.m. This evening provides new and continuing adjunct faculty the opportunity to meet one another as well as other members of the College of Education staff. A general overview will start the evening and break out sessions with Program Coordinators will answer specific questions regarding the upcoming semester. COE Summer Camps! This summer the College of Education is offering a "PALs Camp" and "Arts Camp" for local elementary school childern. Parents! Register your 1st through 8th grader for either the Physically Active Learners Camp (PALs) or the Arts Camp this summer. Space is limited, register early! Contact Pat Joho at (815) 740-3528. More... The College of Education is sponsoring a Scholastic Book Fair on April 5th through the 7th from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm. The fair will be held in room 203 of the USF Library. All profits will be donated to the Farragut School Library. For additional information about the fair or donating books to the Farragut School Library, contact Donna Metlicka. March 31 Dr. Bernice McCarthy will be presenting on March 31st at the Twin Oaks campus. Her presentation will address critical issues in education using a learner-centered approach. Dr. McCarthy is an internationally recognized educational authority and author of a number of books on the teaching and learning process, including About Teaching. In this session, Dr. McCarthy will explore the requirements of high performance teaching and learning. COE members and candidates are invited to attend. Register is required. Donna Metlicka, COE Instructor, successfully defended her dissertation on March 19th. Donna will receive her Ed. D. in Curriculum and Instruction from Northern Illinois University in May. |

| Congratulations to COE faculty member Dr. Lisa White-McNulty for achieving success in two scholarly endeavors. Dr. White-McNulty is the co-author of "Epistemology and Adolescents' Conceptions of Procedural Justice in School" a study published in the very prestigious Journal of Educational Psychology. Additionally, Dr. White-McNulty is lead author on the Laboratory for Student Success Partnership Series on motivation and social emotional learning which produces research-based guides for parents and teachers. | ||

March 20 The University of St. Francis faculty member, Dr. Joan Caton, will be presenting at the International Learning Disabilities of America Conference on March 20, 2004 in Atlanta, Georgia. The topic of her presentation is "Expanded Instruction for bilingual students and those with learning disabilities." Dr. Caton is an Associate Professor in the College of Education. Recently, Dr. Caton also represented the University of St. Francis while delivering her presentation, "Identifying and Meeting the Needs of Bilingual Learners," at a Speech/Language and Learning Services Conference in Seattle, Washington. |

February 29-March 6 Amy Benish, Assistant Certification Coordinator for the College of Education, joined University Ministry at USF on a mission trip to Nazareth Farm in Salem, West Virginia during Spring Break. Fourteen USF students, including education majors Tom Adent and Stacy Hogan, served local families near Nazareth Farm through home repair and spiritual community building. |

The College of Education hosted "Breakfast with the Bishop" on January 16th, in the University of St. Francis Recreation Center. "Breakfast with the Bishop" kicks off Catholic Schools week by honoring Catholic Schools in the Joliet Diocese. A student from each school is invited to have breakfast with Bishop Imesch. more... During the event, the "Bishop Joseph L. Imesch Award for Excellence in Teaching" is presented to an outstanding teacher in the Joliet Diocese. |

The College of Education is proud to announce the creation of The Electronic Journal of Teaching and Learning. The mission of the publication is to allow undergraduate and graduate teacher candidates, and the educational community, the opportunity to share their academic pursuits and research findings with others in the field of education.
