August 7-11
Dr. Donna Metlicka, Assistant Professor for the College of Education presented at the Association of Teacher Educators (ATE) Summer Conference in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Aug. 7-11. Metlicka presented "Groupthink in Teacher Professional Development Delivered through Cohort Programs" which focuses on the results of research into the presence of "groupthink" in teacher professional development programs delivered in cohort settings. Metlicka holds an Ed. D. in Curriculum and is the elementary education coordinator for the College of Education.
 
July 25-August 6
The University of St. Francis hosted the Associated College of Illinois (ACI) College Readiness Program Summer Academy for the second consecutive summer. High School students from the Chicagoland area gained first hand knowledge of college life by attending classes, partaking in extra-curricular activities, and living in residence halls. Amy Benish, Assistant Certification Coordinator for the College of Education, taught the technology course and USF alumni, Tara Powell (M.Ed. with Certification) and Melissa Groot (B.A.) taught Mathematics and English. June 17

This year's theme of the Regional Education Academy for Leadership Annual Reading Conference is Navigating the Literacy Highway. Keynote speaker, Dr. Maria Walther, will present "A Teacher's Travel Bag of Reading and Writing Strategies". Ten break-out session are also planned to address various areas of literacy for the K-8 educator. Please phone Colleen at 740-1311 by May 10th for further details and registration information.

June 2-17

Dr. John Gambro, Dean of the College of Education, along with 16 USF students, staff and alumni journeyed to Sucre, Bolivia on a mission trip in June. During their stay in Bolivia, the group volunteered at schools, orphanages and hospitals in Sucre. College of Education teacher candidates Tom Adent, Kristen Brown, Jennifer Lutz and Maria Zavala were among the group. The candidates worked with special needs children and adolescents of all ages. The group also worked extensively with local teachers and administrators while providing materials, instructional techniques, and professional development.

 

COE Summer Camps!

This summer the College of Education is offering a "PALs Camp" and "Arts Camp" for local elementary school childern.

Parents! Register your 1st through 8th grader for either the Physically Active Learners Camp (PALs) or the Arts Camp this summer. Space is limited, register early! Contact Pat Joho at (815) 740-3528. More...

Education majors! You can enroll in either Physical Development & Health (EDUC 215) or Fine Arts (EDUC 216). Candidates enrolling in the summer courses will serve as teachers in the camps. More...
