T-Pals

The T-Pals (Teachers Teaching Parents About Literacy Skills) program is a professional development graduate level course which provides teachers and families with methods to support learning and maximize familial participation in their children's emerging literacy.

The course uses the National PTO Standards for family involvement, The Illinois State Standards for English Language Arts, and research-based best practices in reading instruction as a foundation. As part of the program, teachers develop year-long plans for incorporating family involvement in their classrooms and schools. Teachers also receive a variety of materials to use in their classroom and to send home with students to support their literacy learning. During the school year, families are periodically brought together with teachers as part of a "Family Literacy Fair". The teachers prepare interactive activities for the fair, using the materials from the class, designed to educate parents about literacy skills and provide them with strategies to assist their children's reading development.
