Assistant Director, Academic Resource Center (ADARC#1)
The University of St. Francis is a Catholic, Franciscan institution, serving more than 4,300 students at locations throughout the nation. USF's main campus in Joliet, Ill. is located about 35 miles southwest of Chicago in a residential neighborhood and serves 1,300 students.
Hours/Shift/Work Schedule: Mondays through Fridays with some evening and weekend hours
POSITION SUMMARY: This position assists the director of the Academic Resource Center in day-to-day operations and long range planning to provide academic programs and services to support student learning and success. This position is directly responsible for developing new web-based learning support services for all students, but especially for online and distant students. This position also serves as coordinator for services for students with disabilities. As part of the ARC team, this position works with a range of students and student groups, and over 40 tutors, mentors, and Supplemental Instruction leaders.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Use innovative technology to provide learning support and enhancement, especially to distant and online students.
- Assess learning support needs of distant and online students
- Work in collaboration with students, faculty and staff to create learning supports that enhance student’s academic development.
- Develop, implement and assess innovative web-based and electronic materials for learning support.
- Help coordinate and oversee Summer Academy, a summer bridge program
- Serve as Coordinator for Students with Disabilities and review all documentation and requests for accommodations for self-identifying students with disabilities.
- Determine and coordinate appropriate accommodations for each self-identified student according to federal standards
- Administer budget for disabilities services
- Develop institutional and community links to maximize delivery of services.
- Provide proctoring for exams and assistance with assistive technology.
- Serve as resource for campus personnel in dealing with issues concerning students with disabilities.
- Deliver structured academic assistance as well as intensive, one-to-one academic coaching, and monitor progress; Guide students to develop appropriate learning strategies
- Assist with implementation and assessment of services provided through the ARC
- Represent the ARC at various meetings and functions.
- Pursue grants and alternative funding sources.
- Assists with other projects and tasks as assigned.
- Master’s degree in education, educational psychology, student personnel, counseling, or related discipline.
- A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in teaching and/or academic advising demonstrating a proven ability to work with students, faculty, and staff.
- Knowledge of a broad range of technology and its application to learning support and enhancement, with an intense desire to find new ways to adapt the latest technological innovations to learning support.
- A working knowledge of the American with Disabilities Act and section 504 and their relationship to higher education.
- Understanding of the learning needs of college students and best practices in student success.
- Evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of working with students of diverse backgrounds
- Experience with both adult and traditional-age students.
- Strong oral and written communication and problem solving skills and computer literate.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience with web-based technology to supplement learning.
- Teaching experience in higher education
- Familiarity with the use of instructional technology and media and to assist disabled students
