Archives Librarian (ARLIB#1)
The University of St. Francis is a Catholic, Franciscan institution, serving more than 4,300 students at locations throughout the nation. USF's main campus in Joliet, Ill. is located about 35 miles southwest of Chicago in a residential neighborhood and serves 1,300 students.
HOURS/SHIFT/WORK SCHEDULE: This is an exempt position, with a minimum expectation of 40 hours/week. Typically, M-F, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Some evenings and weekends required.
POSITION SUMMARY: Performs a variety of duties involved in the organization, arrangement, and retention of official University records, and describes records having continuing administrative, legal, fiscal or historical value. Acts as a liaison for the university and the library with local and distance users, as well as unaffiliated researchers. Provides assistance and instruction to patrons regarding the use of the library's print and electronic resources and archival materials
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist Library Director with acquisition and retrieval of University historical items through University Archives. Collaborates with Library administrators to plan, develop, and implement local archive policies and procedures and to identify and prepare archival materials for digitization and web presentation.
- Provide support for development of archival-based library displays.
- Occasionally cover essential public access areas and telephones.
- Responsible for the preparation of print and online archive collection finding aids including inventories, abstracts and folder lists; index records on network database system using a controlled vocabulary.
- Coordinate with Head of Technical Services to have University Archives and other materials (e.g., books, periodicals, syllabi) cataloged and digitized when applicable.
- Assist researchers in the use of finding aides and the identification of available archival materials; respond to selected written requests for research; retrieve current and non-current records from closed stacks in accordance with policies and procedures governing access and confidentiality.
- Train library staff to provide access to archives collections and/or to retrieve information from the archives collection when Archives Librarian is not available.
- Advise outside agencies, scholars, journalists, and others concerning the history of the University; establish policies related to access to confidential materials.
- Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's Degree in any computer related field (or equivalent) plus MLS courses with degree completion in 1 year
- Demonstrated problem-solving skills within a technological environment, ability to prioritize assignments, and an aptitude for complex, analytical work with attention to detail
- Interest in current trends and developments in archives and library technology
- Demonstrated initiative and flexibility; excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to work independently and collegially on a variety of issues in a dynamic environment
- Ability to demonstrate flexibility and initiative in response to changing circumstances
- 4 years experience with PC-based computer software, operating systems, web authoring and peripherals (scanners, printers, cameras) necessary to perform a multitude of tasks related to the library's ILS (Voyager) and digitization system (ContentDM)
- Strong desire to work within a non-profit environment
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- ALA-accredited Master's degree in Library Science or a Master's degree with graduate archival training
- Demonstrated archival digitization work
- 3 years of archives experience
