Director of Career Developement (DCD#1)

The University of St. Francis is a Catholic, Franciscan institution, serving more than 4,300 students at locations throughout the nation. USF's main campus in Joliet, Ill. is located about 35 miles southwest of Chicago in a residential neighborhood and serves 1,300 students.

HOURS/SHIFT/WORK SCHEDULE: Days, 12 month position; some evenings and weekends required.         

POSITION SUMMARY: The Director of Career Development is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining all facets of the Career Development Center.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Uphold and fulfill the mission, vision, values, and traditions of the University of St. Francis;
  • Promote a professional atmosphere within the University community;
  • Maintain an appropriate professional demeanor and appearance commensurate with the position;
  • Establish and maintain an effective reporting structure within the department and to the chief student services officer;
  • Maintain, coordinate and oversee documentation for all facets of Career Development including maintenance of placement and follow-up assessment records as described within this document;
  • Collaborate with the Career Development Advisory Board, representative of the various colleges in the university, in meeting the needs of their respective students; hold meetings at least four times per year;
  • Conduct post-graduation surveys and provide statistical data regarding student and alumni placement to the university;
  • Provide comprehensive individual and group career counseling services to a diverse university audience including undergraduate, graduate students and alumni both on and off campus nationwide; regarding career opportunities, internships and job placements;
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures for administering the credit internship program;
  • Maintain a database of students and alumni with respective resumes who are looking for positions that can be shared with potential employers;
  • Maintain a database of employer jobs and internship opportunities for students;
  • Maintain a close working relationship with the Intercollegiate Small College Placement Association actively participating in various committees, functions and activities of the organization.
  • Develop a working relationships with community businesses, educational institutions and other organizations in order to provide career and intern opportunities for students and alumni;
  • Coordinate with Core I faculty, sessions designed to introduce Freshman students to the Career Development Center and to assist students in setting career goals early in their educational process;
  • Plan and implement ongoing Orientation Programs designed to apprise students (especially seniors) of the services provided by the Career Development Center;
  • Administer and interpret interest inventories (Holland’s Self Directed Search, Career Occupational Preference Survey, Strong Campbell, etc.) and utilize the FOCUS or System of Interactive Guidance and Information (SIGI) computerized guidance system for career counseling;
  • Counsel students seeking advanced degrees.  Maintain and provide appropriate information and resources for those students;
  • Provide job search assistance by presenting workshops on resume writing, interviewing skills, and job search strategies;
  • Maintain an up-to-date Career Resource Library and web site for use by students, alumni, faculty, and administration;
  • Develop, implement, and maintain a Procedure Manual for the Career Development Center;
  • Provide career counseling to high school sophomores through the University of St. Francis’ Project College Bound Program;
  • Support the Admission Department’s recruitment efforts by introducing the Career Development Center to prospective students who attend Open Houses/Registrations and by offering individual counseling sessions to students with specific career needs;
  • Participate in professional development opportunities and share in the information and resources offered through professional Career Development organizations;
  • Develop and maintain a monthly and yearly departmental budget;
  • Submit an annual budget to the chief student services officer;
  • Carry out other assignments as designated by the chief student services officer

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A Masters degree in student personnel, counseling, education or business is required with at least three to five years successful experience in career services in a college/university setting.  The Director evidences support for the mission, vision, values, and traditions of the University of St. Francis as well as a commitment to higher education.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: The desirable candidate will possess a terminal degree in student personnel or related area with at least five years in higher education.
