Certification in English/Language Arts
Students majoring in English may earn a Standard Secondary Teaching certificate (6-12) in Language Arts. In order to qualify for certification, each student must complete the following:
- All requirements for the Bachelor of Arts degree in English
- The liberal education requirements for teacher certification as required by the ISBE for secondary (6-12) level and listed under the College of Education
- The
required courses in professional education for
middle school and secondary certification as
listed under the College of Education
- The prescribed field experiences (written certification must be provided if field experiences are transferred from another institution)
- All required certification tests
A minimum grade point average (G.P.A.) of 2.5
overall and 2.75 in the Additional required
courses for certification candidates: English
majors seeking secondary teaching certification
must fulfill these additional requirements:

ENGL 318 Teaching Composition or ENGL 319 Tutoring
Composition (as an elective
within the 40 hour requirement) - or ENGL 319 Tutoring Composition (as an elective within the 40 hour requirement)
- ENGL
321 The English Language: History and Grammars
(as an elective within the 40
hour requirement) - ENGL 390 Methods of Teaching English in the Secondary School ( as an elective within the 40 hour requirement)
- MCOM 101 Concepts of Communication (as a three hour requirement beyond the 40 hour requirement, for a total of 46 semester hours)
