Have you ever wanted to link a post-colonialism to a cartoon, but weren't sure how to
do it? One professor of Anthropology, Candice Bradley has done so. Curious George,
anyone?

" On one level it's a dumb but beloved children's story. On another, it is a
post-colonial parable in which George stands for Africa, and the zookeeper and man
with the yellow hat for benevolent colonizers. George stealing the keys
and liberating the animals is a parable for the decolonization of Africa. From the
middle of this century onward, the African took the keys from the white man and let
himself out of the cage."

This article talks about the setting of the novel, post-colonial critiques of the
novel, gives you links to Edward Said articles, Achebe's critique and Images of
Illness in Africa.

A copy of Chinua Achebe's "An Image of Africa: Racism in Conrad's Heart of Darkness"

"Heart of Darkness projects the image of Africa as "the other world," the antithesis of Europe
and therefore of civilization, a place where man's vaunted intelligence and
refinement are finally mocked by triumphant beastiality."

This article defines Africa as "the other" and Achebe makes some very strong
arguments about Conrad being a racist! Pretty heated stuff!!
