Caliban & Ariel

Characters in Shakespeare's The Tempest. Caliban is an uneducated, sub-human creature. In "Mauberley" it is possible that # is comparing Caliban to Christ.

See stanza 2:

"Christ follows Dionysus,

* * *

Caliban casts out Ariel."

Caliban can been seen as a representative of the simple, common man with an attitude that exemplifies that which has taken over society. If so, it would follow that the carefree Dionysus is being compared to Ariel, the airy sprite. Both untroubled spirits are replaced by those of a more serious nature.
