Sappho
Sappho was a highly regarded woman poet from Lesbo.
It was believed that she instructed others in music and
poetry. Love was the principle subject of her poems. She
lived c. 7th C B.C. She played music on an instrument that
is noted in line
four of #'s poem: a "barbitos." This
instrument was an early form of the lyre.
Again, # is commenting on the elevated art of the old world, and
compares it to the "pianola," the instrument of the modern time.
Notice, if you will, that in
line 3, # places "
marks around the word replaces, thereby giving an ironic tone to the
claim.
Could it be that # is suggesting that the lyrics of modern music is void of
any poetry???????????? Very possible!! (Imagine that!)
