Hopeful Interpretation


    Here are some key words in V. What the Thunder Said that shows how this can be a hopeful resolution to The Waste Land.

 Hermit-thrush chirp sounds like water dripping.  This signifies that of life since water is a key symbol of life and fertility.

Ganga River is a river in India that is sacred to the Hindus.  The belief is that this river has is that it has the power of           purification.  All one has to do is to touch the water and they are then pure.  The name of the river comes from the               goddess, Ganga, who is the daughter of Meru, the god of the Himalayans.  She was given to heaven to soothe the             gods with her cool water.

Himavant is a mountain in the Himalayans.  The Himalayans are the highest mountain range in the world.  Therefore           they are the closest to the sky, which means that they are a lifting towards God.  Because of the uplifting to God,                 the Himalayans are the holiest mountain range.

Fish is also a symbol of fertility and life just as the water is.

Dayadhvam means sympathize which also show hope, hope of The Waste Land.

Shantih is repeated three times to make the final line of the poem.  Shantih means peace.  Shantih is the last word               that the reader reads, this gives the final impression of PEACE, which entails a hopeful resolution. NB
