Center for the Study of Contemporary Ethics
Vision 2003
The
Center for the Study of Contemporary Ethics has
grown out of the concern for the challenges of
Christian living in the modern world. Faced with
the many moral and ethical dilemmas, the Center
has been established to assist faculty, students
and professional business people achieve greater
understanding of the ethical dimensions of professional
life.
The center has a dual focus. First, it supports
efforts aimed at assisting the faculty to develop
multiple means of educating our diverse student
body about professional ethics. Second, it offers
a forum for dialogue in professional ethics that
includes the greater community. The Center for
the Study of Contemporary Ethics is a resource
for the discussion of those pressing ethical issues
that challenge men and women in their professional
lives.
The Center for the Study of Contemporary Ethics
encourages serious consideration and application
of ethical values in professional decision making.
Responsibility for one's actions and respect for
the dignity of others is fundamental. The emphasis,
therefore, is on the importance of dialogue for
developing mature moral judgment, both personally
and in group decision making. This includes particular
virtues in the workplace, such as compassion,
charity, honesty, fairness, empathy and concern
for the common good.
The Center for the Study of Contemporary Ethics is guided by the Franciscan belief that the peace of peacemakers is to be found in all places: the workplace, the city, the total marketplace, the church and chapel, and the University.
