PERSONAL COUNSELING SERVICES

Do my parents have to be informed if I seek personal counseling, or if I have emotional or mental problems?
Your identity and the fact that you have sought or received mental health services is confidential and protected by the Illinois Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities Confidentiality Act. You must consent in writing for any release of information. There are exceptions in life threatening emergencies.

How do I know when I need professional help with my problems?
If you have tried everything to resolve the problem and nothing seems to work, it would be a good idea to at least consult with a counselor to see if professional to see if professional help is needed. Sometimes just one meeting is enough to give you the information you need to resolve the problem. Counselors are interested in helping you to become in control of your life. They do not tell you what to do or how to do it.

I have had difficulty sleeping. What should I do?
Difficulty falling asleep or remaining asleep, (e.g. waking up in the middle of the night and not being able to fall asleep for a while) can be signs of depression or anxiety. If you have been under considerable stress, if you are worried, if you have been staying up late and have your days and nights mixed up; it probably would be a good idea to see a counselor in order to get your life back in order. In the meantime, watch your caffeine intake. Go to bed before midnight and get at least eight hours sleep each night. Eat nutritional foods, not a lot of junk food, and don't eat right before going to bed. Also, don't run your television while going to sleep. The light from the T.V. can make deep sleep difficult.

I am really afraid that my boyfriend or girlfriend will reject me for someone else. How can I deal with this insecurity?
Unless your boyfriend or girlfriend has given you good reason to suspect that he or she will leave you, it is best to consider this your problem to work on. How do you deal with being alone? Are you o.k. with yourself when other people do not like you or reject you? Do you base your self worth on whether others accept or like you? If you are personally insecure, nobody else can resolve that problem for you. You must find a way to learn to be at peace with yourself, alone. Sometimes a counselor can help you to achieve that peace.

I have noticed that I can drink alcohol a lot longer now than I could in the past and that I can drink more alcohol without getting the same effect it used to give me. What is going on?
You can develop tolerance to Alcohol, like any mood altering chemical. If you notice that it takes considerably more alcohol to give you the desired effect, or if you find yourself drinking rapidly in order to quickly get to the point where you want to be, you should consider this a danger sign and not a sign of strength or prowess. Your body's normal way of telling you that you have had enough is not working like it used to. That is like a smoke detector that does not engage until the house is burning. Contact your Personal Counseling Department to check on your drinking. We will help you make decisions that you think are in your best interests.

I am really worried about my weight since I got into college. I am eating more junk food, and I have gained weight. People say I look good, but I think I am really grossly overweight. What should I do?
We live in a society that places a great deal of emphasis on appearance over character and what really counts about a person. Remember that you cannot reject your genetic makeup. Don't try to be very thin if your body is not made that way. If others say you look fine, try to trust them especially if they are good and honest friends. Eat properly without eating too much junk food. Eat a good breakfast and balanced meals. Eat a good breakfast. You can go light on lunch. Eat a balanced supper. Get exercise but in moderation, e.g. three or four times per week is plenty. Don't overdo anything, food, exercise, study, or play. Everything in moderation is a good way to live. If you have lost more than 15% of your normal body weight, it might be best to consider talking to a counselor. There can be many reasons for weight loss and some of them are serious

I feel kind of alone and sad. I tend to see the dark side of life and when I am given assignments I start to worry right away, wondering how I am ever going to get them done.
Depression can overtake us without being aware. It is particularly marked by feelings of helplessness, hopelessness, seeing the dark side of life and not being able to enjoy things we used to enjoy. Sometimes it can get so serious that we consider suicide as an escape. If you have noticed your attitude becoming more negative than usual, irritability, or a tendency to not see the humor in life, it would be a good idea to see a counselor. Depression is treatable and there is no reason to suffer unnecessarily.

If I seek professional counseling, does it appear on my college records?
Your counselor will keep his or her own clinical records. Those records are kept exclusively under lock and key and they have nothing to do with your academic records. After seven years, counseling records are destroyed. The fact that you have sought or received counseling will never be part of your educational and academic records here.

If I have other questions, can I e-mail a counselor?
Of course, remember however that we cannot take responsibility for access that others may have to your e-mail records. If you are concerned about the confidentiality of your e-mail, you might consider calling us by phone (815) 740-3598, or send us a letter at the Personal Counseling Department, 500 Wilcox Street , Joliet , Illinois 60435 . If you would just like to stop by and drop in you can also do that. We are located in office S219 in the Student Affairs Department, S218. Contacting us does not mean that you must commit to counseling.

Each academic department has a listing of internship sites that are available from year to year based upon the needs of the intern sponsor. You may also check with the Career Development Center, Tower S148, if your academic advisor doesn't have internship sponsor sites available.

Do I have to take an internship for academic credit? Are all internships non-paid?
No, to both questions. An officially recognized USF internship is offered for academic credit (talk to academic advisor for guidelines). In addition, these internships may or may not be paid. It is determined by the actual internship sponsor. Talk to the Career Development Center director to determine the best option for your situation.

How do I get an on-campus job?
Contact the Career Development Center to find out what types of positions are available. All USF students must be full-time, in good academic standing and have proper identification.

How do I find out about full-time jobs opportunities available to USF graduates?
Make an appointment with the Career Development Center director to determine the positions you are best qualified to pursue. You can also find out about some available positions by going to the Career Development Center web site, www.stfrancis.edu Current Students...Career Development...Vacancy Bulletin (bottom left hand margin).

How do I contact the Career Development Center (CDC) and where are they located?
Kevin Bab, Director, can be reached via email at kbab@stfrancis.edu or by telephone at (815) 740-3413. Stacie Odhner-Sibley, Secretary, can be reached via email at sosibley@stfrancis.edu or by telephone at (815) 740-3590. The Career Development Center is located in room S-148.

What are some of the services offered to me in the Career Development Center ?
The philosophy of the Career Development Center is that career education is a life-long process. We will assist students from their freshmen year and continue on until the end of their professional career(s). Through guidance and support the CDC will assist student/alumni at every phase of the job exploration process including: self awareness, career identification, internship/professional job search strategies and career transition.
