Solar Charged Project

This project evaluated the use of Photovoltaic (PV) energy to supply the electric load required to charge student electronic portable devices (EPD) in a campus dormitory of University of Saint Francis (USF).  In support of USF, “greening” of campus initiative, a PV system analysis was conducted for Marian Hall Dormitory.  The analysis included a comparison between direct current (DC) supply and alternating current (AC) supply PV systems.  Electronic portable devices, such as, cell phones, laptops, and MP3 players, require DC to charge their batteries.  Adapters are utilized to invert AC to DC, and there is approximately a fifteen percent energy loss because of this inversion.  This project evaluated the opportunity to recover this inefficiency with a DC supply PV system.
