Turhan

Turhan was the favorite concubine of the mentally deranged Ibrahim.  Following Ibrahim's assassination in 1648, Turhan's son, Mehmed IV, was made sultan.  Mehmed was only seven-years-old at the time, and Turhan governed for him.  Although she had to compete for power with Mehmed's overbearing grandmother, Kosem.  Kosem soon died and this left Turhan in control of an increasing volatile government.  The empire delved into a period of anarchy that would last until 1656.  It was then that Turhan convinced Mehmed to appoint Koprulu Mehmed his grand vizier and grant him dictatorial powers.  Koprulu Mehmed proved to be an excellent statesman and he completely turned the empire around in only three years.  When he died in 1671, he was replaced by his equally talented son, Koprulu Ahmed.  With the Koprulus acting as grand vizier, Turhan's role in government declined.  She died of natural causes later on during her son's reign.
