Finding Magazine & Journal Articles

Users may search the USF online periodical databases from any computer providing Internet access (from home, Library, or anywhere on campus).  The online databases are indexes of journal and magazine articles in a wide variety of subject areas.  The databases will help you locate citations, abstracts and in some cases full-text articles.  If you have any questions about the online databases, please call the Reference Desk at (815) 740-5041 or 800-726-6500 (distance students).

 Search Hints
  • Choose the Appropriate Database:  Choose databases relevant to the paper topic or assignment subject.  Be aware of the database's coverage before searching.
  • Every Database Has a Unique Interface:  Each online database has its own unique look and features.  Remember the conceops of searching rather than memorizing "search steps".  Also, use the help screens provided for additional search tips.
  • Dates Covered by Databases are Limited:  Most online databases only cover from  the mid-1980s through the present.  Look for backfiles within a database or use print indexes to find older material.
  • Full-Text:  Remember that even databases that are advertised as full-text do not have full-text for every article.  Full-text databases typically offer from 25-60% of articles indexed with full-text.
  • Interlibrary Loan:  If you find a citation to a journal that the USF library does not own and the article cannot be obtained full-text, it may be ordered by Interlibrary Loan--see a Librarian or the Library home page for details.
Databases Available Through the USF Library:

Access to all databases is through the Online Databases link on all library web pages.  If you are off campus, you will need to log in to the library's proxy server to access these resources. Click here for a full list of databases. For help guides and tutorials, click here.
