Finding Books
Books can be a major source of information for research papers. Reference books have been touched upon briefly in the previous section. Books tend to be compilations of research about a subject. The focus of a book will be somewhat narrower than an encyclopedia, but broader in scope than a journal article (more discussion later). The following is a typical example of the scope of a book in comparison to a reference work and an article:
- an encyclopedia about science
- a book about photosynthesis
- an article about ATP synthesis during the Krebs cycle of photosynthesis
Finding books about your topic is easier than now than ever. No longer do you need to know an exact subject heading and stand for hours at the card catalog drawer. Now most searching can be done online. The next few screens will describe the resources available and the techniques to use for searching for books.
