Selecting a Topic

The first step to a research paper is selecting the topic. In some cases, a topic will be assigned to you. However, if you need to select your own topic, be aware that this is one of the most difficult stages of the reseach project.

Use the following steps to choose a research topic:

1. Brainstorm for ideas. Keep in mind any constrains placed by the class or the instructor.
2. Focus your topic.
3. Make a list of useful keywords.
4. Restate your topic as a research question.
