Major - Teacher Certification
Mathematics
majors who are interested in teacher certification
at the secondary level must make formal application
to the teacher education program at the time of registration
for the freshman year. Students are advised to consult
with the teacher education program for information
regarding secondary teacher certification requirements.
Students majoring in Mathematics may earn a Standard Elementary Teaching Certificate (K-9) or a Standard Secondary Teaching Certificate (6-12). In order to qualify for certification each student must complete the following:

All requirements for the Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics

The liberal education requirements for teacher certification as required by the ISBE for either elementary (K-9) or secondary (6-12) level

The required courses in professional education for either elementary, middle school, or secondary certification as listed under the Teacher Education Program

The prescribed number of hours of approved pre-student teaching clinical experiences (Written verification must be provided if clinical experience is transferred from another institution.)

Teacher Candidate Assessment (Applicants for certification will be required to complete successfully the Illinois Certification Test, which will include both a basic skills test and a subject matter test.)

A grade point average (G.P.A.) of 2.5 overall and 2.5 in the major.
