Meet A Vet Profile – Brandy Akers

Bachelor of Science Nursing

United State Navy, Aviation Electrician Technician, October 2003—July 2009

To what degree does the GI Bill cover your school expenses? 90% of my tuition, so that leaves me paying a couple grand a year. Plus I get a book stipend and BAH payments.

What prompted you to return to school? I’ve always wanted to be a nurse.

Was adjusting to campus culture a challenge after military life? For me the social aspect has been different because you get used to people acting a certain way in the military and the majority of students are fresh out of high school.

What has your experience been like at your school? University of St. Francis is the first university I have gone to, but I have gone to plenty of community/junior colleges. The atmosphere here at USF is so warm and inviting. You truly feel as though your professors care about you succeeding!

Do you believe your military experience has made you a better student? Yes. I have a lot more discipline in school now than I did before the military.

What advice do you have for veterans returning to school? Set your goals and stay focused. As long as you remain disciplined you will do just fine.

Student Quote: “I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you…. Do to others as you would have them do to you. If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even “sinners” love those who love them.” – Luke 6:27-28, 31-32
