Area colleges present at the University of St. Francis

The University of St. Francis will be host to the Associated Colleges of the Chicago Area (ACCA) Symposium on The Scholarship of Pedagogy on Oct. 8 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Presentation topics include research on effective teaching strategies, online teaching, student-teacher collaborations in classroom learning and/or research, theory and classroom practice, service learning, effective classroom technologies, teaching and travel/foreign study, teacher memoirs and experimental pedagogies.

Presenters for the 2005 symposium include faculty from the University of St. Francis, Aurora University, Benedictine University, Concordia University, Dominican University, Judson College, Lewis University, St. Xavier University, Trinity Christian College and Wheaton College.

"AS USF is a learning-centered institution, I am very excited to host an event that brings together faculty from 10 Chicago-area colleges and universities to discuss technology, methods, and innovations in undergraduate teaching," said Frank Pascoe, dean of USF’s College of Arts and Sciences. "This kind of enthusiasm for studying the ways students learn is exciting to witness. Everyone leaves with ideas on how to improve their teaching skills."

Bill Bromer, professor of biology; Randy Chilton, professor of English; Salim Diab, professor of chemistry; Veree Ethridge, professor of business administration; Ingrid Goobar-Szleifer, assistant professor of English and foreign language; Vin Katilius-Boydston, professor of English; Marcia Marzec, professor of English; Richard Nicholas, assistant professor of Theology and Ling-Yi Zhou, associate professor of psychology, will present on a variety of topics.

During the first session from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. presentations include: Chemistry and Crime: A Non-Majors Course in Forensic Science by Diab; Effective Classroom and Online Technology in Economics by Ethridge; and How to Keep Research Going in a Small Teaching University by Zhou.

From 10:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. presentations include: Ethics of Grading by Katilius-Boydston; The Use of Verbatim and Non-Verbatim Formats to Promote Qualityative Learning by Nicholas and Motivating Heritage Speakers to Improve Their Spanish through Service Learning by Goobar-Szleifer.

From 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. presentations include: Anglo-Saxon England: Pedagody for a Cross-Disciplinary Course by Marzec; Preliminary Results from the Use of a Student Response System in Earth Science to Dispel Misconceptions; and a presentation by Randy Chilton.

The keynote speaker is Dr. Kathleen McKinney, Illinois State University professor of sociology and scholarship of teaching and Learning Cross endowed chair.

The goal of the ACCA Scholarship of Pedagogy Symposium is to provide an opportunity for faculty to present research and share experiences in teaching undergraduates in the arts and sciences.
