USF art camp will give children hands-on experiences
Summer Arts Camps at the University of St. Francis will give children an opportunity to get hands-on experience in drawing, painting and ceramics or to learn about music, theater and the visual arts. Three summer camp sessions are offered.
The universitys Fine Arts Department will offer two sessions of its Art Workshop, which will focus on a specific medium including drawing, painting and ceramics. Sessions are June 14-18 and July 12-16. Sessions meet from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the university. The workshops are for children in first through fifth grades. Children will have the opportunity to work with USF art professors and art majors. Tuition is $50 per student.
The universitys College of Education sponsors the 2004 Summer Arts Camp that is designed for children entering first through eighth grades. Children will be grouped by the grade they will enter in the fall. The camp runs daily from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. June 21-25 at the university. Cost is $50 per child. USFs College of Education students will assist in teaching the classes.
"The programs are designed to stimulate and nurture the artistic side of children and to develop art appreciation, stated John Gambro, dean of the College of Education.
"The camps are a way for children to be exposed to a variety of arts in an age-appropriate way. It also helps USF education major students learn how to integrate art into the curriculum and teach it in an authentic setting," Gambro added.
Art teacher Elizabeth Lee, who has taught for the Channahon School District for more than 20 years, will direct the camp. University of St. Francis art professors will act as artists in residence for the camp and work with the children.
