USF scholastic book sale to benefit local elementary schools
A scholastic book sale to benefit A. O. Marshall Elementary School and Farragut Elementary School will be conducted at the University of St. Francis, Oct. 4-6.
The community is invited to the sale that is open from noon to 8 p.m. in the universitys Moser Lounge in Tower Hall, 500 Wilcox St., Joliet.
Children's literature, adult literature and reference books will be available for purchase.
The book sale is sponsored by the universitys College of Education, which works with nearby Farragut and A. O. Marshall schools on a number of projects. "The sale is a service project that we do to help build these schools libraries and support them," said Donna Metlicka, USF instructor. "We work closely with both schools for the mutual benefit of all students grade school and university students. USF student teachers assist these schools with projects or initiatives they need outside help with." For information about the book sale, call (815) 740-3528.
Last semester, the fair raised $725 in books for Farragut Elementary School.
The University of St. Francis serves more than 4,300 students nationwide. Teacher education is one of its oldest and largest majors. The university offers bachelors degree programs in elementary education, special education, and secondary education with certification in Science Biology, Language Arts, Social Science-History and Mathematics. The university offers the masters in education with two tracks of study (Education Leadership leading to an Administrative Type 75 Certification and Teaching and Learning, which can be tailored to school district needs and focus. The Master of Education with Certification is also offered to those who have bachelors degrees in other fields and are interested in obtaining teaching certification while earning a masters degree.
The universitys Regional Education Academy for Leadership (REAL) program is committed to developing dynamic partnerships within the educational community. REAL offers conferences and seminars in the areas of character education, reading, math and science. REAL services include masters degree cohorts, new teacher induction programs, professional development in-service, special approval/certification programs, and educational conferences.
