CAPA to award scholarship to University of St. Francis student at neighborhood meeting

The Cathedral Area Preservation Association has awarded a scholarship to a University of St. Francis student from the Joliet area. The award will be presented at the annual CAPA Neighborhood Open Meeting on Monday, Nov. 10 at the University of St. Francis.

A first-year USF student Jennifer Roberts, a Joliet Central High School graduate will receive the $1,000 scholarship in recognition of her excellent academic record. She will major in biology at the university and is on the track team.

Scholarship recipients must be graduates of a Joliet high school.

While at Joliet Central, Roberts was co-captain of the track team, a member of the science team and a member of the class activities committee. She played violin in the orchestra. Roberts was also the first female member of the wrestling team to win a match. She is the niece of Evelyn Johnson of Joliet.

"CAPA is interested not only in preserving our neighborhoods, but in improving the entire community, and education is the key to a strong future for our city," said Kurt Schackmuth, CAPA president. "The CAPA board chose to support a Joliet area student at the University of St. Francis, which we consider a cornerstone of our neighborhood. "

This year's check will be presented at CAPA's Annual Neighborhood Open Meeting for the Cathedral area to University of St. Francis President Michael J. Vinciguerra and Richard Kloser, professor of mathematics, who serves as the university's liaison to CAPA.

"CAPA's generous scholarship and willingness to partner with the university on various projects shows us how much education and our presence is valued. We look forward to additional joint projects and initiatives that will strengthen our neighborhood and the greater community," he added.

The open meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. in the university's Moser Performing Arts Center auditorium.

The meeting provides residents of the Cathedral area an opportunity to voice their ideas and concerns about the neighborhood to CAPA board members and City of Joliet officials. CAPA residents are encouraged to attend. For information about the meeting, call CAPA at (815) 726-4163.

A Catholic, Franciscan institution, the University of St. Francis serves more than 4,300 students nationwide, including 1,300 at its Joliet campus. More than 60 area of undergraduate study are offered as well as 10 graduate programs.
