Leading authority to discuss cloning, stem cell research at USF

One of the country’s leading authorities on bioethics issues—cloning and stem cell research—will speak at the University of St. Francis on Monday, Sept. 18. The public is invited to this free lecture.

A priest and neuroscientist, the Rev. Tadeusz Pacholczyk, Ph.D. will present Stem Cells and Cloning: Understanding the Scientific Issues and the Moral Objections at 2:30 p.m. in the Moser Performing Arts Center auditorium. For information, call (815) 740-2274.

Pacholczyk is director of Education for the National Catholic Bioethics Center in Philadelphia. A leading authority on bioethics issues, he has appeared on CNN International, ABC World News Tonight, and National Public Radio. Pacholczyk has spoken at many universities across the country, including Cornell University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Northwestern Medical School, Boston University, Marquette University and others.

Pacholczyk earned a Ph.D. in neuroscience from Yale University, where he focused on cloning genes for neurotransmitter transporters which are expressed in the brain. He did post-doctoral research as a molecular biologist at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School. Pacholczyk also studied for five years in Rome where he did advanced work in dogmatic theology and in bioethics, examining the question of delayed ensoulment of the human embryo. He has testified before members of the Massachusetts, Wisconsin, Virginia and North Carolina State Legislatures during deliberations over stem cell research and cloning. He has given presentations and participated in roundtables on contemporary bioethics throughout the United States, Canada and Europe.

The presentation is sponsored by the USF’s Center for the Study of Contemporary Ethics and University Ministry, and supported by the Respect Life Office of the Archdiocese of Chicago.
