USF presents Crests, Laurels and Proof exhibit
The University of St. Francis presents Crests, Laurels and Proof, an exhibition by Chicago-based photographers Shauna Angelblue, Jerry Cargill and Tammy Mercure. The show runs through Dec. 4, 2005 in the Moser Performing Arts Center gallery.
The exhibition addresses the ephemeral qualities associated with photography. Each artist works in a manner that reinforces and simultaneously contradicts established systems of belief and perception related to how one should interpret and interact with a known place or symbol.
Angelblue uses a medium format camera at a slow shutter speed to cover movement and an unbalanced sense. While in France, she created a series of images in a Gothic cathedral that appear part ritual and fantasy.
Cargill works with a Russian-made Lomo camera while documenting the western landscape to create a painterly affect. One feels as if on a walk someplace between reality and a dream world in his Holga-produced photographs made in the upper Midwest and Southwest United States.
Mercure uses a pinhole camera to achieve dreamlike scenes of what appear to be distant, exotic places, however, her 19th century inspired travel photography sites are in fact found right here in the United States.
Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays. For weekend hours or other information, call (815) 740-3404.
