USF art students address life in Detour exhibit
"Detour,"
the 2003 Senior Thesis exhibit for University
of St. Francis arts majors, is a compilation of
paintings, graphic art and childrens illustrations
that can be seen through May 25 at the university
in Joliet.
"Detour"
can be seen in the universitys Moser Performing
Arts Center gallery. Gallery hours are 9 a.m.
to 9 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 9 a.m.
to 5 p.m. Fridays. For weekend hours or additional
information, call (815) 740-3821.
Also
finishing his fourth year as an art professor
at USF is Michael "Chester" Costello.
"These students have been the central catalyst
for the growth of visual arts at USF," said
Costello. "They present a solid show, and
I will dearly miss seeing them on campus."
For her series of Baroque-style paintings, Jaclyn
Chubinski of Lansing used methods inspired by
the masters Caravaggio and Artemisia Gentileschi.
"I have always felt the Baroque style perfected
the technique of painting. It brilliantly captured
truth through realism and with the effects of
tenebrism," said Chubinski. "The stark
contrasts of light and dark create the illusion
of illuminated figures, lit by a single light
source."
Chubinski
credits the development of her talent for Baroque-style
painting to the encouragement of her high school
and college art teachers. She has also decided
to become an art teacher and hopes to inspire
future artists.
A
combination of poetry and graphic design are incorporated
in the artwork of Joliet native Darryl Gates.
Gates has completed two books and three album
covers that can be seen in the show. His artwork
is greatly inspired by his experience of growing
up in Joliet. The book Lifes Soundtrack
consists of poems, photography and drawings. "This
book is set up in chapters from birth to life,"
said Gates. "The meaning of Lifes Soundtrack
is that we all have our experiences that make
us the person we are today." The poems are
a soundtrack of the book.
The
second book is a bold look at the misfits of our
nation, of war, money and the love of God. Gates
has also made three album covers, designed for
his own rap CDs, entitled Acceleration, Man of
No Reputation and Can I Get a Do-Over, all referring
to God and His relationship with man.
Amanda
Lokes of Tinley Park presents a series of childrens
illustrations. The project involves the love and
friendship of two characters, a young girl named
Honey and her best friend/dog named Bridget. "Through
my illustrations I am clinging to a belief that
we never have to entirely succumb to adulthood,"
said Lokes. "I think it is important to maintain
certain non-negotiable levels of innocence, trust
and enjoyment for life."
"Dogs
are very much like children. They put no limitations
or stipulations on their love
Bridget and
Honey represent love and friendship, encompassing
all that makes life worth living. They are the
glass menageries that I have created and now must
sustain and protect from being broken. They will
never reach the inevitable point that all humans
reach, having cracks in the glass or being shattered
altogether," said Lokes.
The
Senior Thesis Art Show was coordinated by Susan
Inendino of Downers Grove and Nicki Poropat of
Orland Park, both also graduating seniors from
the Visual Arts program.
The University of St. Francis, at 500 Wilcox St.
in Joliet, serves more than 4,300 students nationwide.
The university offers more than 60 areas of undergraduate
study in the arts and sciences, business, health
care and education. Ten graduate programs are
