University of St. Francis names trustee emeritus
The University of St. Francis has honored longtime
Board of Trustees chairman Thomas M. Flavin as
trustee emeritus. Flavin was honored for more
than 30 years of service during commencement ceremonies
May 10.
Flavin
joined the Board of Trustees in 1971 and served
as chairperson of the Board of Trustees from 1981
to 1994. With his leadership and support, the
University of St. Francis grew and expanded its
educational programs to meet student needs throughout
the nation, according to Carolyn Murphy, chair
of USFs Board of Trustees.
Flavin
provided leadership and inspiration in the undertaking
of two capital campaigns resulting, in 1986 with
the renovation of Tower Hall, a new Recreation
Center, new science laboratories, bookstore, and
maintenance facility, and, in 1993 with the Moser
Performing Arts Center and enhanced student scholarship
and faculty development funds.
Under
his leadership, the university established its
first graduate programs that would be offered
to health care professionals throughout the country.
Flavin
is recognized as a steward of the Catholic, Franciscan
ideals of the University of St. Francis, and as
one who remained faithful to the mission of the
university, said Murphy.
Flavin, who retired from the Board of Trustees
in February, was previously honored by the university
with the prestigious Presidents Award. He
also received an honorary doctorate of humane
letter degree in 1994.
Flavin
is a retired executive from Inland Steel Co. and
president of Flavin and Associates. He and his
wife, Lois, live in Darien.
The University of St. Francis serves more than 4,300 students nationwide, including 1,800 at its main campus in Joliet.
