End-of-life issues to be discussed at University of St. Francis

End-of-life issues will be discussed in a workshop offered by the University of St. Francis and Joliet Area Community Hospice on Saturday, May 21 at the university’s Joliet campus. The public is invited to this free event.

"This is a very timely topic in light of the Terry Schiavo case and the death of Pope John Paul II," said Daniel Hauser, USF professor of theology, who will moderate the discussion. "We encourage adults of all faiths and all ages to attend because this is something that will affect each of us, either as individuals or through our loved ones."

A panel of experts will offer advice on medical and ethics issues such as do-not-resuscitate orders, advanced directives, durable power of attorney and other considerations at end of life. Participants will receive a packet of information about how to put their affairs in order, according to Hauser.

The panel will consist of Joliet Area Community Hospice’s Tom Barkauskas, director of social and spiritual services, and Dr. Alan Rozen, medical director. Gaile Nellett, USF assistant professor of nursing, who specializes in ethics and end-of-life issues, will also participate along with Deacon Ed Petak, director of Pastoral Care and chair of the Medical Ethics Committee at Provena St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet.

The workshop will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the university’s Moser Performing Arts Center auditorium. For more information, call (815) 740-3404.
