University of St. Francis donates exercise equipment to help community
The University of St. Francis donated exercise equipment to the Illinois Youth Center (IYC) -Joliet and the Peter Claver Center of Joliet after the recent renovation of its Recreation Center Weight Room.
USF had a surplus of exercise equipment that was still in good condition, but was no longer needed. "Our goal was to donate it to facilities in the community that had a need for the equipment, but could not afford it," said Pat Sullivan, USF athletic chairman. "And at the same time, we wanted to know that it was actually going to be used."
With the recent budget cuts, the IYC was in dire need of exercise equipment for young boys to use at their facility, but there was no money in the budget. "This was a perfect opportunity," said John Rita, IYC-Joliet acting warden. "The equipment gives our youths the ability to exercise a positive outlet for energy. At the same time, we use it as an incentive for good behavior."
IYC Instructors have reported seeing an improvement in the youths behavior to ensure their time on the equipment. "Id like to thank everyone at USF for their generous donation and concern for the youth of IYC Joliet," said Rita.
The newly renovated University of St. Francis Recreation Center Weight Room features both Hammer Strength and Lifetime Fitness plate-loaded and selectorized machines, to go along with new cardiovascular equipment and flooring. Audio and video equipment are also a part of the renovations.
"This is a win-win project for everyone associated with the university, from our current students and student-athletes, to our faculty and staff, and our alumni and future students," noted Sullivan. "Now, all of the people that we serve can enjoy a state-of-the-art workout facility. At the same time, we were able to demonstrate our Franciscan values by donating the old equipment to facilities in the community."
Funding for the Recreation Center weight room project was raised completely by the athletic department through its Saints Club, Brown & Gold Night and annual golf outing.
The mission of the IYC-Joliet remains focused on providing a safe and secure working and living environment for all youth and staff. Youth are enrolled in school immediately upon arrival to the facility. In 2003, 25 youth graduated with GED certificates. The center also reorganized its academic school assignments. In addition, church affiliations increased to provide comprehensive religious services at the facility.
The Peter Claver Center aids the economically disadvantaged residents throughout the Will county community to become self sufficient. Center volunteers and staff offer free tutoring, job-placement help, computer training and recreational programs, to youths and adults.
The University of St. Francis serves more than 4,300 students nationwide.
