USF’s ‘Exploring Joliet’ wins awards

"Exploring Joliet," the cable television show produced by University of St. Francis students, has won two video awards in international competition. A student-produced show covering a basketball game also won.

The awards are made by The Videographer Awards, an international organization that helps set the standards for the video production industry.

"Exploring Joliet" examines the city, it’s people, plans and activities in a 30-minute cable television show that began in February. The show airs on Joliet community television channel 6 on Saturdays at 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. and on Comcast channel 3 at 11:30 a.m. Sundays.

"Exploring Joliet" features a "person you should know" segment, a spotlight in-depth interview, question of the week "person on the street" segment, area entertainment coverage and high school and college sports highlights. USF students plan and conduct interviews both in the field and in the studio, produce animation and graphics, direct, anchor, videotape and edit the shows.

"The students have put their top effort into the ‘Exploring Joliet’ shows and it’s great to see that their commitment and quality work is recognized by such prestigious awards," said Richard Lorenc, executive producer and mass communication professor at USF.

"The ‘Exploring Joliet’ experience benefits everyone involved as well as the citizens of Joliet," added Lorenc. "As Joliet’s university, we’re pleased to offer such a service to the city and its citizens. The show helps residents be better informed about our city, its growth and changes. And, students get real-world experience that broadens their academic classroom experience. This is hands-on learning at its best and one of the benefits of a small university experience," he said.

The March 8, 2003 "Exploring Joliet" won the Award of Distinction in the category of TV Production/Creativity/On-Camera Talent. The Award of Distinction is given to projects that clearly exceed industry standards. The show featured Joliet historian and author Robert Sterling.
