Exploring Joliet provides look at financial aid in Spanish

Exploring Joliet, a cable television show produced by University of St. Francis students, offers a special program on financial aid and college admissions in the Spanish language. This special program features Joliet City Councilman Alex Ledesma.

The 30-minute Spotlight on Financial Aid show will air on Joliet television channel 6 on Saturdays, Nov. 19 and 26 at 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. and on Comcast channel 3 at 11:30 a.m. Sundays, Nov. 20 and 27.

Alicia Morales, admissions counselor, and Erika Guzman, associate director of financial aid, of the University of St. Francis talked with Ledesma regarding financial aid resources and admissions requirements and procedures. Frequently asked questions were addressed in the discussion.

"We hope this program will address many of the concerns that families have about the financial commitment to send their children to college," said Guzman. "It is important that Latino parents and all parents know there are many options and opportunities for them and their children."

"Many people may think a quality, private university education is out of reach. We can show you that private education costs can be comparable to public schools," added Morales. This year, the University of St. Francis will award about $6.3 million in institutional funds to student financial assistance. About 92 percent of USF undergraduate students receive some financial assistance, according to Morales.

The university makes available information on USF scholarships, tips for completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and on applying for admission. Information is available online at www.stfrancis.edu or by calling (800) 735-7500.

Exploring Joliet shows feature "person you should know" segments, spotlight in-depth interviews, question of the week segments, area entertainment coverage and high school and college sports highlights.

USF students plan and conduct interviews both in the field and in the studio, produce animation and graphics, direct, anchor, videotape and edit the shows. USF senior Sarah Moore, of Joliet, did the camera work. Junior Stephen Feledy, of Chicago, did audio, electronics and graphics for the Spotlight on Financial Aid show. Both students are mass communications majors. Richard Lorenc, USF faculty member, was director.

The University of St. Francis serves more than 4,100 students nationwide. The university offers more than 60 areas of undergraduate study, including Mass Communication with concentrations in broadcasting/audio-video, advertising/public relations and media arts. Twelve graduate programs are offered in business, health care, education and social work.
