University of St. Francis invites public to celebrate ‘Green Week’
The University of St. Francis invites the public to celebrate "Green Week," April 17-21 with many activities at its Joliet campus. Green Week will feature information about recycling and using "green" products along with the sale of native plants homegrown by USF students.
Tuesday, April 18, at noon, "Solid Waste and Recycling Status Report" reviews how USF has increased its recycling rate and made an impact on garbage costs to the university. Lydia Kuyawa-Dow, co-founder of Solid Waste Solutions Corp., will give the presentation in the Moser Performing Arts Center studio theater.
Also on April 18, Solid Waste Solutions, Corp. will have a display showing the difference in energy needed to power incandescent light bulbs versus compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Uno Lounge, Tower Hall. Also, participants can try out the IDCEO Energy Bike.
Native Illinois plants grown by students in the USF greenhouse will be sold from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 19 in Uno Lounge, Tower Hall. Also on April 19, the maintenance department will sponsor USF spring clean-up day. Participants will meet in Parking Lot A at 2:30 p.m.
The Will County Land Use Department and Will County Forest Preserve will feature a display from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 20 in Uno Lounge, Tower Hall. A panel discussion: "Simplicity at Nazareth Farm" will be presented from noon to 1 p.m. in the Presidents Room, Tower Hall. Also on April 20, the movie Baraka will be presented at 1 p.m. and 2:45 p.m. in the Abbey, Marian Hall. Baraka, or "breath of life," is a transcendently poetic tour of the globe. It is a visualization of the interconnectedness humans share with the earth.
The week will end with a field trip to the Land of Lakes "Willow Ranch Yard Waste Facility" in Romeoville, where participants will see how leaves and grass magically turn in to new soil. Participants will leave USF at 12:30 p.m. and return at 3 p.m. on Friday, April 21. Call (815) 740-3284 for transportation or other information.
Up all week in Uno Lounge, in Tower Hall, there will be a display on green topics by professor Salim Diab’s Chemistry in the Environment class.
The Green Week Celebration 2006 is coordinated by USF’s Greening of Campus committee made up of students, faculty and administrators.
The University of St. Francis, at 500 Wilcox St. in Joliet, serves 4,300 students nationwide with more than 60 areas of undergraduate study and 11 graduate programs.
