University of St. Francis celebrates Homecoming/Reunion 2004

The University of St. Francis will celebrate Homecoming/Reunion, Oct. 1-3 with a variety of activities for alumni, students and friends, including a Senior Saturdays presentation entitled Assisi Comes Alive, a live performance by one of the top Elvis impersonators in the United States and the third annual Quadstock music festival.

To kick off the homecoming weekend, David Schrader will perform An Evening of Baroque Music at the Harpsichord on Friday, Oct. 1 at 7:30 p.m. in the Moser Performing Arts Center auditorium. Equally at home in front of the harpsichord, organ, piano or fortepiano, Schrader is an extraordinary musician of wide-ranging interests and accomplishments. He has performed with the Chicago, Dallas, San Francisco and Colorado Symphony Orchestras. Featured composers include Bach, Rameau, Bohm and Scarlatti. Tickets are $8; $5 for students and senior citizens. Reservations may be made by calling (815) 740-3404.

Sister Marianne Saieg, a USF alumna, will present Assisi Comes Alive, a Senior Saturdays program, at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 2 in the Library. All are welcome to attend the presentation, which is sponsored by the university Library’s Learning Throughout Life program for senior citizens. Saieg is a spiritual director, speaker and photographer. The program will include a slide show and musical meditation of Assisi as well as photographs Saieg has taken while visiting Assisi, Italy, home of St. Francis.

Another USF alumna, Dr. Karen Kietzman, and USF students will also help bring
St. Francis to life through art, literature, travel and personal experiences. Kietzman, a practicing Joliet artist and former art teacher at USF, will discuss her paintings of Assisi, which will be on display in the library lobby.

Adding to the presentation, USF students Elise Bukowski and Tom Adent will share their experiences from a recent pilgrimage to Assisi. Bukowski is a senior English major from Oak Forest and Adent is a junior elementary education major from Frankfort.

University of St. Francis President Michael Vinciguerra will present "A USF Renaissance: Corridors of Franciscan Engagement" on Saturday from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Moser Performing Arts Center studio theater. USF has begun a new era of expansion in facilities, enrollment and community outreach in response to a rededication to the university’s mission and legacy of its founders, the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate. Vinciguerra will discuss the campus master plan and how it is central to the university’s growth.

A Fireside Chat with USF alumnus Kenneth Johnson is on Saturday from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Moser Performing Arts Center studio theater. Johnson is a nationally known, award-winning former journalist and serves as senior advisor to the Chairman of Communications Director for the U.S. House Select Committee on Homeland Security. In addition to acting as chief spokesman for the committee, which oversees all activities of the Department of Homeland Security, he is involved in helping implement the 9/11 Commission’s recommendations into law.

Also, on Saturday, Elvis Live will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Moser Performing Arts Center studio theater. Bring your blue suede shoes, devour a fried peanut butter banana sandwich and watch a live performance by one of the top Elvis impersonators in the United States. (Or is it truly the King of Rock and Roll? You decide!)

The Homecoming/Reunion celebration will culminate on Sunday with the third annual Quadstock festival. This year, the music festival will feature a variety of local performers, games, an auto show, food and family fun on Sunday, Oct. 3 from noon to 4 p.m. on the university’s quadrangle. The Joliet Fire Department will provide a fire safety presentation and the Joliet Police Department will provide fingerprinting for children. USF student clubs will offer food and games for kids, including face painting and a jumper. The USF Alumni Association will also have a booth. USF’s student-run radio station 88.7 THE EDGE will emcee the event.

Admission to Quadstock is free. The event is co-sponsored by The Herald News and Mr. Bill’s Music.

The Alumni Registration Desk will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday at the Tower Hall entrance. USF’s Bookstore will also be open. For more information about Homecoming/Reunion weekend, call (815) 740-5047.
